The books owned by planter Richard Mitchell of Lancaster County, Virginia are documented in the probate inventory of his estate, ordered September 1781 and recorded 20 December 1781. Most of the books are listed as being located "In the Dining Room," with two titles in a later, unheaded section. Five of the titles are also listed in a later section headed "Mrs Mitchells part of the Personal Estate." The books are valued at £4/8 out of a total estate value of £1462/16/8.
