The library of Thomas Hayward is documented in the probate inventory of his estate, taken 8 March 1681. The inventory begins: "Imprimis his books: Mr. Sheppard's book upon the parable of the ten virgins & Mr. Sheppard upon the sincere convert, Mr. Ralph Allen of the riches of the covenant of grace, also his victory over the world, & Doctor Presson's of God's all sufficiency & severall other sermons annexed thereunto & Mr. Dod upon the commandments & Mr. Cooper's book of Jacobs wrestling with God, Mr. Byfield his marrow & his principles, A Bible with some other smale books" valued at £1/5. The total value of Hayward's estate is given as £46/11/9.

Thomas Hayward was born ~1599 in Aylesford, Kent; he emigrated in 1635 on the Hercules, settling first at Cambridge, Massachusetts before removing to Duxbury by 1638 and Bridgewater by 1658. His profession at the time he emigrated was given as tailor. He and his wife Susanna had nine children. Thomas Hayward died before 8 March 1681, when his inventory was taken.
