The books owned by merchant Thomas Hewitt of Bladensburgh, Maryland are documented in the probate inventory of his estate, taken 9 February 1787 and recorded 8 August 1788. The books are bracketed together under the heading "Books" and valued at £2/5. What seems to be Hewit'ss merchant stock also includes "10 small Slates" valued at 4 pence each; "1 Prayer Book" valued at £0/2/6; "1 doz. horn Books" valued at £0/1/3; and "9 Battle Dores" valued at £1/6 (these have not been included in the library). The total estate was valued at £1708/9/10 and three-quarters pence.
