The illustrations in this book are quite impressive. I also thought it was interesting to learn how slowly s (1), she is ultimately given pancakes by generous neighbors (1), only to have her pets ruin her plans. Although (1), *Fiction* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This story appears to be about a woman who goes to great lengths to make pancakes for breakfast (1), I enjoyed the unexpected twist of Red shooting the Wolf dead. I think the main point of this story was to show a different perspective and outcome of a familiar story. (1), even more so than the original (1), *Poetry* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This story is Roald Dahl’s variation of Little Red Riding Hood. I found it to be very humorous and entertaining. While it was a bit graphic (1), *Fiction* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This story is about a baby bird in search of his mother. Along the way he encounters numerous animals and other objects that he thinks may be his mother but are not. He eventually returns to the nest to find his mother there (1), *Fiction* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This book consists of five short stories involving Toad and his friend Frog. The stories were only mildly entertaining but each included a moral. I didn’t particularly like these stories and I felt some of the language was (1), it can even lead to success and accolades. I enjoyed this story because it had a positive message. I also liked that it was a chapter book even though it was very short. This is a great way to introduce young readers to chapter books. (1), like in Buzz and Fly Guy’s case (1), *Fiction* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This story is about a boy named Buzz and his “pet” fly named Fly Guy. The main point of this story was to show that it is okay to be different a go against the grain. Sometimes (1), even though they may not be as interesting to the common observer as what might be on television. I enjoyed this poem and I think the main point is to show that sometimes old stories are better than a new craze. (1), *Poetry* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This poem is about a child who enjoys listening to the stories his grandfather tells about times gone by (1), I believe the main point is to show the emotions experienced in different civilizations. (1), but I think the jungle may be a euphemism for American society. Although I did not really enjoy or understand this poem (1), the reader can feel her sense of frustration as she goes through each step to make her own pancakes. I really liked this book because it was extremely clear for a picture book. I don’t think the illustrations were anything spectacular but they did a dec (1), and dealing with nightmares. (1), *Concept* This book does a great job of teaching readers about simple rhyming words. I like this book specifically because it places an emphasis on word families. I also like that there is a progression in the story that connects the previous rhymes to ne (1), even though there are ups and downs (1), *Fiction* *Caldecott Medal Book* This story is about a boy who travels to the North Pole upon a magical train to see Santa and receive the first gift of Christmas (1), *Fiction* *Caldecott Medal Book* This story is about a frog that courts and ultimately marries a mouse. I enjoy this story because it there is a song that accompanies the book (although the book was written after the song had been around). I also enjoyed (1), *Poetry* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This poem is about someone who encountered a number of people and items while traveling to a place called St. Ives. I enjoyed this poem because it is a mathematical riddle as well. This would be a great way to illustrate how (1), *Poetry* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This poem is about the different ways items are covered. I didn’t really care too much for this poem because I didn’t understand the point. I liked that it rhymed but otherwise (1), I didn’t really understand the purpose of the poem. I am assuming the main point of this poem is to teach children about limericks and rhymes. I think the poem also tries to show how “covers” can be comforting to children and make them feel protecte (1), it is quite heartwarming and endearing. I think the main point of this story is to show that family is what you make it. (1), *Historical Fiction* *Newberry Medal Book* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This story is about a widower and his two children. Papa places an ad in the newspaper for a mail-order bride and Sarah answers the call. This is a great story because (1), *Historical Fiction* This story is about a talented young pianist named Sandy who has a physical disability because she contracted Polio as a child in 1954 (1), *Historical Fiction* *Newberry Medal Book* This story is about a young orphan named Bud who goes travels in search of his father after his mother passes away and he is shipped from foster home to foster home in the 1930s. The man he suspects is his father (1), but are unable to buy a home in a suburb due to the amount of racism and bigotry taking place at that time. Josie and her grandmother end up getting a small plot in a community garden in their city neighborhood. I enjoyed this story because it was very in (1), *Historical Fiction* This story is about a young African-American girl named Josie who lives in an apartment with her family and grandmother in the 1950’s. Her grandmother once lived in the south but moved to the North for more freedom and opportunity. (1), he can still excel in many other areas of life. (1), this becomes a problem for Sandy. I enjoyed the story because it spoke about civil rights as well as the fact that children with disabilities can also be very talented. I think the main point of this story is to show how difficult a simple task like enter (1), a lot of buildings are not yet wheelchair accessible. At one point in the story (1), a year before the vaccine was available. Because the story takes place in the 1960’s (1), *Poetry* *CCSS Exemplar Text* This poem is about an African boy’s life in the jungle and the struggles he faces. I am not sure (1), it wasn’t scary at all and would likely be appropriate for any age. I think the main point of this story is to entertain readers with an interesting twist on a familiar story/poem. (1), patience (1), it is good to be creative and regular rules of grammar may not apply. (1), which are the same in all cultures and countries (1), *Multicultural* I really liked this book. I liked how it used colors (1), *Nonfiction* I found this book to be a bit boring. It provides a lot of great information about dolphins and whales but it is not presented in an interesting way. I did like the illustrations though and the section that provided suggestions for projects. (1), *Nonfiction* I liked this book. The photographs were amazing and the information was presented as a story rather than just blurbs of facts. I also thought it was interesting to learn that manatees have no natural predators and their main cause of death is (1), *Nonfiction* I liked this book. The information was presented as a story and the material was interesting to me. I thought it was very interesting to learn that there is now a law that makes it illegal to capture or kill wild horses. This was enacted larg (1), ended up very wealthy in the end. I also liked the way Nick’s mother always seemed to defend him while others were against him. The main point of this book is to teach the benefits of determination in an entertaining way. Any student who reads this book (1), they were all rather short and provided great examples of poetry. My favorite poem was ‘Pick a Stick’ because it was a bit more rhythmic than the others and I enjoyed the words “Ala-ka-zee” and “Ala-ka-zopper”. I think the main point is to sho (1), *Multicultural* I did not enjoy this book as much as I would have liked. It did a good job of incorporating Spanish words and key elements of Mexican culture (1), *Realistic Fiction* I liked this story quite a bit. It wasn’t particularly humorous but there were a few funny lines. I think I mainly liked the book because it had a happy ending and the main character (1), *Poetry* I enjoyed this book because there was a variety of 30 different poems. Although some were more enjoyable than others (1), it also provides a great definition of a centennial. I also liked the connection between George using his feet to count to 10 in the beginning of the story and using his feet to count his steps to 100 at the end of the story. (1), *Concept* This book was very enjoyable. I liked the connection between George learning to count to 100 while at his town’s Centennial celebration. While the main purpose of the book is obviously to teach children how to count to 100 (1), with poetry (1), Nick Allen (1), will power (1), to educate children on key components of the Muslim culture. I also liked that the book rhymed. The illustrations were also very nice. The main purpose of this book is to educate children about the Muslim religion and culture. (1), but the actual story was a bit boring. Although I didn’t particularly like some of the poems or find them appropriate for children (i.e. D is for Demon) I liked the idea of using one book and common theme to teach children the al (1), *Poetry/Concept Books* This story consists of poems about Fall and Halloween items beginning with each letter of the alphabet. For instance (1), I had never actually heard the story. I found it a little strange but interesting. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the way some of the pages had the text written horizontally (1), but I also found it a bit distracting. However (1), *Folktale* This story was Slyiva Long’s take on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen. Although I had heard of Thumbelina (1), *Realistic Fiction* I enjoyed this book although I do not really enjoy cats. It was witty and educational. I liked how the author acted as though he was writing tips for a cat while really he was explaining cats to humans. The main purpose of this book wa (1), it is important to make sure students have an understanding of Autism and how to interact with peers on the autism spectrum. (1), may be experiencing. The main point of this story is clearly to educate children about autism. As the rate of autism continues to increase (1), the character with autism (1), *Realistic Fiction* This book was interesting. It provided a lot of great information about autism in an enjoyable way. I really enjoyed how well the illustrations conveyed the feelings that David (1), I did enjoy that the story encouraged children to drink fruit juice rather than soda in a way that was not too “preachy”. I think the main purpose of this book was to introduce students to Mexican culture while also providing good information about he (1), a bell from the reindeer harnesses. I really enjoy this story; I think because the end makes me happy and a little sad at the same time. The illustrations in this book are by favorite.
