- About Me
I write for the Washington Post, Discover, Smithsonian, Scientific American, and Mother Jones, and received a 2024 Outstanding Feature Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists for my article, "Inside the Crime Rings Trafficking Sand." My books include Ginseng, the Divine Root (Algonquin), Soul of a People (Turner Publishing), and Cork Wars: Intrigue and Industry in World War II (Johns Hopkins Press) about wartime environmental security. That one received an Independent Publisher Book Award. I also write for documentary film and podcasts including The People’s Recorder, a narrative series about the writers of the 1930s, which received a 2025 Signal Award. That grew out of my book Soul of a People and the documentary of that titled directed by Andrea Kalin. Please check out www.peoplesrecorder.com and let us know what you think.
