An eclectic mix of genres including, religion and spirituality (emphasizing LGBTQ, pagan and indigenous traditions), world music, poetry, LGBTQ studies and literature.

David Hatfield Sparks is a writer, musician, researcher, and gay father who written and performed from the Midwest and Manhattan to Austin, Texas and San Francisco, where he has been active in queer artists and writers communities. His work focuses on music/performance/research/politics of gender, religion, the arts, and myth in LGBTQI multicultural contexts.

He, along with his husband of 37 years Randy P. Conner, was an original participant in the El Mundo Surdo Reading Series in San Francisco. His poems and essays have appeared in current and historic feminist and LGBTQ publications. He is co-author, with his life companion and husband Randy P. L. Conner, and their daughter Mariya Ayn Sparks, of the "Encyclopedia of Queer Myth, Symbol, and Spirit"(Cassells,1997) and and "Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions" and other published articles and conference papers on GLBT issues, gender and music. Their essay, "And Revolution is Possible": Re-Membering the Vision of "This Bridge" was published in "This Bridge We Call Home: Radical Visions for Transformation (2002)

His poetry book, “Princes and Pumpkins,” published in 2013, recently won 1st Prize in the Writer’s Digest Poetry eBook Contest. His poem “The Birth of Xochiquetzal” for his close friend Gloria Anzaldua, appeared the anthology "She Is Everywhere" (vol. 3, 2012). In May 2015, he spoke at the El Mundo Surdo Conference at the University of Texas-Austin about Anzaldua’s work. His essay,"Parallel Lives," will be published in the upcoming anthology, "El Mundo Surdo V." His poem, "Blood Lillies in Summer," was published in the 2015 Fall issue of "Witches and Pagans" magazine.

He has written and performed chamber music, music for the theater, as well as in popular genres, including the musical play, Ruby Blues: a queer diary in song. He is currently finishing a spiritual memoir entitled, Wings of Eros, Dance of Dionysis: Exploring Queer Spirituality for Relationships, Families, and Communities."
