- I quoted a statistic to my brother once that the average American home has two books in it. His jaw dropped and he said "That means you are PERSONALLY responsible for thousands of houses that have NO books, in order for the statistics to come out right". I only keep books in my house that I like, so that I can loan them out to friends. I never expect a loaned book to come back but often I am pleasantly surprised when they do.
