What a delightful story! Fiona has always obeyed her mother when she’s told not to go near or into the woods. But then, one day, something happens and in she goes. I was so worried! I mean, there has to be a reason her mom is so insistent, right? As Fiona journeys through the woods, and even through portals into other worlds, we learn so much! But will Fiona make it home again?

This is middle grade fantasy at its finest. Though it’s an awesome read for any age!

Laurel Nightingale has run away from her life and plopped herself down in a very small town of people who have known each other forever. Hoping to start over and find peace, instead she finds a dead body. Well, shit. That is not the new start she was hoping for. But even though the police rule it an accident, Laurel feels like something is just…off. Even though she knows she should just let it go, she can’t. And starts digging. Then another person is dead. Oh, boy. This is so not good for her. Will she earn her way back into the good graces of the community or will she be the next to turn up dead? You’ll have to read to find out the answer!

This is a great cozy mystery. Wonderfully written, great characters, and a twisty mystery to solve. If you feel like solving a puzzle then sit yourself down, grab your favorite beverage (mine’s tea), and enjoy this one.

Talia is impulsive and reckless. After she’s grounded from hunting because she shot her cousin’s pet bird, she's finally allowed to go hunting again, but only under the supervision of her older brother. So what does she do? She sneaks away and shoots the Whisperer’s Voice who is in the shape of a white cat. All because she didn’t take a moment to make sure what she was aiming her arrow at was actually game. Again. I have to tell you, not feeling any liking for Talia at this point. When the Whisperer declares he is taking her prisoner for a year and a day I feel Tal is getting off lucky though she doesn’t feel that way. Too bad.

Tal’s life as the Whisperer’s prisoner is hardly torture. She has chores to do, but they aren’t anything onerous and then she can spend the rest of the time doing whatever she wants. I wish I was a prisoner of the Whisperer. With all his books I’d never be bored. Plus, an island to wander on? Oh, yeah! Sign me up. *sigh* Anyway, life (and the year) goes on and as the 100 year ritual approaches, more and more tears in reality happen as seals start to fail. All 13 Whisperers are working hard to make sure the monsters don’t cross over into their reality. But that’s not the worst thing happening. There’s something else, something the Whisperers thought they’d contained. And Tal is about to do something stupid. Yet again.

This is an entertaining fantasy with an interesting world. The monsters are creepy show more and Tal can be an impetuous idiot at times, but her heart is in the right place. The ending seems a bit rushed, but there’s obviously more to come. I’m invested enough to read Book 2. show less

Matthew Carver has had some awful things happen and he’s wallowing in self-pity. So much so that a demon named Dan (really? Dan?) mosies up to him and makes him a deal - 10 years of the best life he can imagine in exchange for his soul. But while Matt is miserable, he’s not stupid. So he says no. This is where things go south. Literally. Like far far South, i.e. Hell. Dan forges Matt’s signature on the paperwork and high tails it out of there before Matt realizes wtf just happened. Oh, no, he did not! Now Matt is on a mission to reclaim his soul. And maybe beat the piss out of Dan while he’s at it.

The author grabbed me by the shirt collar and pulled me straight the fuck into the story. My attention was all in like I had the winning hand at a high stakes poker game. I just had to know how regular guy Matt was going to find a demon and get his soul back. I mean, you can’t just pull up the BBB and file a complaint, right? Leave a bad review on Google? How and where in the world do you even start?!

This is a fast-paced well-written tale with great characters, and an intriguing problem. I can’t wait to read book 2.

I finished this in December of 2024, so it’s a bit hazy for me. I know Rosella Midnight has to go home to Winterspell, a magical city with a no humans allowed rule. Her family own a bakery and she has to help out in exchange for moving back home. There's a mystery involving a sea serpent, missing girls, and a hot guy is in there somewhere. I remember being entertained by this. There’s humor, mystery, magic, and a yummy man. Oh, and a yummy bakery. I liked it enough to go through several of the series in a row.

This technothriller starts out at a moderate amble as we meet Mickey, learn about the long life he has led, and his decision to be the human guinea pig in a medical trial that is mind blowing. Reverse aging?! Come on! You’re yanking my chain, right? But no. By the time Mickey makes it backward to 23, the inevitable problems surrounding this procedure start to become clear. This kind of technology is worth billions and there are people who will stop at nothing to have it all to themselves. And this is where the pace ramps up.

What a ride! This is a chase that is worth reading. Honestly? I’d love to see this as a movie. It wouldn’t even need to be on the big screen. Tell Netflix to make it one of their Originals and I’ll watch it with popcorn in hand. The action is succinct and not drawn out. Told with minimal detail to keep the story flowing it doesn’t get bogged down in a lot of extraneous stuff. It stays on target. Gold Five would be proud. I’ve been thinking about this story ever since I finished it. Our world is already a cess pool of greed and calamity. What would happen if this tech were actually real? Would I want to go through the process? What about the ramifications? Is it ethical? How the hell would this industry be regulated? I mean, technically, assuming multiple age reversals are safe, a person could live forever. Well, if they don’t die first. Can’t bring someone back from the dead in this story, so no risky behavior like show more jumping without a parachute. I go around and around in my head about it and my conclusion is this: I don’t have a fucking clue. show less

I know this has been said in previous reviews, but it’s going to be a recurring theme for awhile until I get caught up. So, I finished this audiobook back in December 2024. That’s a long time ago in book years. Especially since I've listened to and otherwise read many books since. However, I remember this story as an entertaining and unique read. It’s a mashup of historical fiction, mystery, paranormal, and zombies, and I love it. The writing, the characters, the mystery, and the narrator. All superb. Two non-decaying thumbs up. I’m going to keep an eye out for the next books to go on sale.

Ok, so here’s the thing. I listened to this back in December of 2024. I don’t remember much of it. I have vague impressions of a not bad story, but the main character is kinda shitty. I feel like I didn’t really like her. However, I did give the book a 3, so there is that. My gut tells me I won’t be continuing with the series. Which is confirmed by my Chirp purchases - I have not bought book 2.

Well-written and creepy as hell, this book doles out five tantalizing appetizers of horror to whet your palate for more. Each story centers around a particular Museum which I find intriguing. Pull up your Woman Wunderoos and dive in.

The Screaming Room ~ I count this one as the most horrifying of the five.

The Grinning Man ~ I actually like the ending to this one the best. Although, I’m not sure what the future brings for that family. Happy ever after? Or not?

Et In Arcadia Ego ~ This one gets the Most Creepy award, but also has a satisfying ending.

The Shape of the Beast ~ I count this the weirdest. It is so strange and mind-blowing. What the hell did I just read??

The Whispering Shell ~ This is probably the second most horrifying of the bunch. And so sad.

If you like horror, but maybe only in small bites, then this is the book for you.

Carly Ravenspell’s parents died and she’s been banished in the boonies to Thornwood Estate and a grandmother she doesn’t know.

I finished this way back in November of 2024 and don’t remember much of it. Pretty sure Carly is a bit of a brat. But she just lost her parents so I cut her some slack. Her grandmother seems nice and the house has secrets. There’s some kind of mystery? And there’s magic involved. Sorry. That’s all I can dig out of the recesses of my noggin. I obviously liked it enough to give it 3.5, so be guided by that.

Devlin Mahoney has retired to the tiny Texas town of Cottonmouth. Was it his choice? Not really. But he accepted the job of motel proprietor versus the alternative. Because Devlin Mahoney and several other of the good citizens have pasts they need to keep hidden. The only rule is: don’t bring attention to the town. Well, then they shouldn’t have brought Mahoney into the fold.

What a wild ride! This story reminds me of the movie Red. Sort of. It’s an excellent comedy thriller! Or would that be thriller comedy? Thrilledy? Anyway…Mahoney is quite the wise ass, but he’s a wise ass with a conscience. He may have to kind of live by the rules of the town, but he will not allow innocents to be harmed. And when Britte and Siobhan show up acting as if they are running from someone bad, Mahoney knows things are probably going to go to shit. Yep. He’s correct.

This is a fast-paced tale filled with action galore, plenty of great characters, and a ton of danger. Strap yourselves in, we’re going for a ride. If you like Orphan X (which I love) then this is the story for you. Except Mahoney has more friends than X.

A former military guy and current alcoholic private investigator, John “Slim” Hardy exists on booze and slim pickings of cases. When a well-off client asks him to investigate what her husband is doing Friday afternoons he takes the case. But as the weeks go along, Slim isn’t coming up with anything concrete. So he has to do some digging. During the investigation he sleeps with his client. Yikes. That's a no-no. He does some other stupid shit, but I finished this book in November of 2024, so the story is hazy. I don’t really remember the ending. I think it was spooky? In any case, I enjoyed it enough to give it 4 bites and bought book 2, so there ya go.

The beginning of this book is the grim end of humans on Earth. They’ve just buried Isabelle Sanborn’s ex-husband, David Kirkland (a class A asshole, btw) and with Isabelle herself dying, she needs to convince the love of her life, Diego Nadales, to go back in time and try to fix their timeline. They need him to avert the apocalypse that destroys everything they were trying to save.

In 2020, I read Crossing in Time by the author. It’s essentially this story, but much more polished. The issues I had in CiT are resolved in Hive and the story moves along at an even and smooth pace. The characters are flawed making them feel more real and the situation is nail biting. Kirkland is a real jackhole. Wow. Why in the hell did Isabelle marry him over Diego? We aren’t given an answer to that question, but I question her intelligence about a guy so obviously awful. One disappointment is there is no real POV for “old” Diego who travelled back in time. We glimpse him here and there, but that’s it. Bummer. The ending is a cliffhanger setting up Book 2 Jump and I’m looking forward to seeing how it unrolls. If you like some time travel and apocalyptic action in your sci-fi then be sure to pick this up.

Cam believes he’s a failure. I’m not entirely sure why. But when he writes his name in the family book of magic, his ability doesn’t appear. Nothing. Nada. He feels absolutely no different. Every single person in his family has had their magical gift appear right away. So, this further reinforces his sense of worthlessness. Except, something does happen. A rare ability shows itself when he summons the God of Mischief himself, Loki. Uh, oh. Things are about to get super interesting.

The writing, the world, the characters are all excellent. The sudden appearance of Loki is an added bonus even though it set my nerves on edge. You just know he’s going to do something awful. Does he? You’ll have to read to find out. Trust me. This is a story totally worth reading.

Alchemist Ortez is on trial, accused of murdering the main employer of Aurora. In this world, trials are unique in that they have alchemists who can give elixirs to people and connect their minds together with a halo and wire. Then the legal alchemist can see what the other person sees/remembers. This way they can tell the judge whether the person is telling the truth. As long as the legal alchemist isn’t corrupt then this way of doing things would and should prevent innocent people from going to prison. Or being executed. There are other kinds of alchemists, of which Ortez is one, but he’s also a unique alchemist. He knows he didn’t commit murder. So, who did?

This story grabbed my attention from the beginning. What a unique way of doing things! How cool would it be to have all kinds of elixirs for a wide variety of uses? Especially ones that prevent people from lying. The writing, the world, the characters are excellent and the mystery of who murdered Everett Day kept me guessing until the end. The surprise in the mountain is also superbly done. All-in-all a great read for lovers of gaslamp mystery.

I listened to this in November of 2024, but didn’t get to the review until now. Because Life. Anyway, my daughter asked me how I remember so many books so far back and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the title will jog my memory, but all I usually need is the blurb and the book comes rushing back to me. Maybe not everything, but a general sense of the book and whether I liked it or not.

I remember this being a fun and humorous tale full of quirky characters. I like that the MC is an older woman (40’s I think) and not a young cute thing. Because I am not a young cute thing. Nothing wrong with those stories, but it’s nice to see more with older ladies like me. Anyway, it’s also got some magic thrown in and some mystery. All-in-all a great way to pass the time.

I read this book in October of 2024, but didn’t get to writing the review until now. Because Life. You’d think I wouldn’t remember what it was about since it was so long ago, but as soon as I started reading the blurb all of its horrible glory came back to me. So, it made an impression on me. Just not a good one.

The main character is TSTL. I mean, what in the actual fuck? No. Everything about this is bad. The boring bits (which is most of it), the two-dimensional characters, and the crappy narration. Skip this one. I’m serious.

Now, having said all that, I have picked up other audios by Kate Bold over on Chirp. I will give her another shot. Or two or three. Just not book 2 in this series. Because Kaylie is a twat of the first order.
So, I finished this audiobook in October of 2024. I had such high hopes for it considering how much people were saying they loved it. Or maybe they just loved the show? I’m not sure. But now that it’s been *looks at watch* 15 months since I listened to the book, I honestly don’t remember very much of it. I think, while it is meant to be humorous, I found most of it to be too silly for my tastes. Maybe the show is better? I might watch it at some point.

WTF. This book is a complete mind fuck. There’s not much else I can say. The writing is excellent and it absolutely terrified me. Probably because the very premise of this story is to leave Earth behind f-o-r-e-v-e-r and travel out into the great unknown with just hopes and dreams that they’ll be able to colonize another planet. A planet, oh by the way, that is over 3,000 Earth years away! You get put in hibernation to survive the journey and wake up when you’re there. Or so you hope! Gah! Then there’s the Commander, who has to keep dipping in and out of hibernation because someone has to maintain the ship between jumps. No thank you. With a side helping of fuck that. Like I said, it terrified me. Lol But that means the writing is *chef’s kiss*!

However, the ending completely befuddled me. Wtf just happened? I don’t like being left with this feeling that I completely missed the whole purpose of the plot. So, I hate the way this book concluded. If there was a point being made, it went completely over my head. And I’m left unsatisfied.

What a fascinating world! Made entirely of water, the people inhabiting it live on ships. Huge ships. I mean, you thought Carnival and Royal Caribbean were big? They are tiny toddlers compared to the main ships of the Monarch Line. Then there are lots of other ships of varying sizes, both legitimate and not. Pirate ships!

Kittiwake turns 11 as the ships on her world start running out of the Marinium (from falling meteors) used to power them. Her ship, the Amazon Princess, is dangerously low, but manages to get a few tiny pieces to keep them afloat long enough to go after a meteor that has dropped down. However, everyone else in the world needs that Marinium, too. And the most famous pirate ship, the Sea Witch, is going after it with all possible speed.

This is a rollicking (and dangerous) adventure for Kittiwake, her friend Scally, and her pet monkey Caboodle on a unique world. Full of wondrous sights and dangerous people as well as uncomfortable truths revealed, this book is an exciting addition to anyone’s bookshelf.

Holy crap. How do I review this without giving anything away?

I love the writing. As I have for all of the books in this series. The characters though? Well, they make me mad. No, furious. Not all the characters, just two of the main ones. Ok, let’s just say this book drew out many emotions in me and I end up, at the last page, just… gah! How dare the author do this to me?! *grabs hair with both hands but does not tear out because ow* Now I’m standing here with my arms folded and a scowl on my face waiting for the next book to come out so I can see what the hell just happened. If you like Historical Fiction then this entire series is one you can really sink your teeth into.
12-year-old Mina is running from the law. Or what stands for the law in this story. Soldiers. There’s a particular Sergeant who wants something she has - a power. When she stumbles across an old lady in the woods, Mina hides in her wagon. That’s when things get really weird. Mina finds out that the old lady, Gam Gam, is a necromancer and she’s willing to help Mina out of this tough spot she’s found herself in. So, Mina joins Gam Gam, a ghostly knight, and undead horses and a cat while they set off towards the coast. However, before they get there, Gam Gam logically decidses, before they can safely make it to the sea, they need to take care of the problem that is the Sergeant.

This is a book full of loss, suffering, and despair. But it is also full of hope, learning, and compassion. Deep subjects for a shortish book and yet it works.

A steady pace, wonderful writing, and great characters make this a delectable read on a gloomy day. Or any day, really. If you like your fantasy a little on the dark side, but served with some humor, too then don’t pass this up. Be advised, don’t be snacking when the zombies are described, because ewwwww.

Ok, so one of the rules is to never go into a forbidden room. And you tell this to a bunch of boys who are already off the rails with their individual problems. And expect them to just…obey? Ahahahaha! Whew. That’s a good one Madame Eldridge. Of course some of the boys go in that room. What did she think? Or maybe she wanted them to go in there? Hmmm…no. I think she was very serious in her warnings. In any case, the whole week goes off the rails when a few of the boys discover secrets about that room and the person who lived there.

I wasn’t sure what to think when I started this book and discovered what a huge weirdo Madame Eldridge was. Wow. She would be a cool eccentric if there wasn’t something just so off about her. Then there’s the whole 3rd floor bedroom thing. And calling the boys by their problem. The strange tasks they have to do? What is going on here?!

The boys don’t disappoint with their behavior and they dig where they shouldn’t, finding out things that are confusing and dangerous. In the meantime, even though Madame Eldridge is super weird, the boys are learning to control their problems. So there is that at least. But there’s evil in the house and some of the boys are determined to figure it out.

The writing is top notch and the whole book comes to life. Great characters and a definite mystery to solve round it all out to make this book an entertaining read.

I really wish I had written this review when I finished the story for BBNYA 2024 back in December. Because this many months from reading it I’m only left with impressions. Although, impressions can be a decent review, right? I remember just falling right into the story. There was no need to gradually wade in. The wonderful writing allows the reader to just jump in with both feet and be there. Glunda is a great character even if some of the others are decidedly not. It’s a cute story. Ok, maybe cute isn’t the word I’m looking for. Charming? Yes, charming. And humorous. And there is greed. Greedy little turds, the Drupe Mages. This is a great book to pick up if you just want an escape from the real world for a while. When things settle down around my home (renovations are creating chaos) I'm going to re-read it. And I only re-read favorite stories. So that should tell you something. Grab your copy now and let me know if you enjoy it as much as I did.

Lawyer Jude Madigan is a character you can really get behind. She’s been through a lot, but it hasn’t stopped her from tackling life head on. She has a hard time, but tamps down her trauma. That is, until an unusual assignment is dropped in her lap. Specifically hers. Her boss says the client asked for her by name though Jude has never met the client before. She reluctantly takes it on and it brings her past rushing back to her.

During all of this she’s working on the biggest case of her career and she needs all of her concentration to pull off a win for her client, a young girl whose mother died in the accident that trapped her in the car under her mom. With her attention divided Jude is afraid of failing. And she’s more afraid of facing her past.

Well-written with great characters this is a tale of repressed trauma finally being addressed and making new friends along the way. Friends Jude would never have met if she’d continued along the path she’d chosen.

I read this book back in November 2024 for the Final Round of BBNYA and I’m only now sitting down to write the review. I didn’t have to revisit the book at all. That's how much it stuck with me. A powerful and compelling read you won’t want to miss.

Ok, so I know it’s been several months (like, 8?) since I finished this, but I still remember the meat of the story. Which is pretty good, right? The beginning is great and that one scene with her soon-to-be-ex is hilarious. Then Leana lands another job, one more suited to her witchy nature. However, her new job/home is having a tiny problem. Ok, not tiny. It’s a murder problem and she’s not having any luck discovering the murderer.

This story and these characters are enough for me to consider the second book. The magic is interesting and the setting unique. Overall, it entertains, but it’s not a “holy shit” book. Well, maybe some revelations there toward the end make it so, but otherwise it’s just a nice easy escape from the real world. Leana does some stupid shit, but secondary characters are great found family. I’m curious about book 2 so I may pick it up some day.

Kita Yamasaki has a plan. It’s an ambitious plan, but it should work. She needs it to work. She needs to get the hell out of Dodge. Or, in her case, Ex-Cathedra. The beginning of her plan is executed flawlessly. Too bad the rest of it goes to shit. Now she’s having to improvise on the fly and she’s more of a methodical planner. But it’s improvise or die. And she may die anyway.

This is one hell of a ride! From the first moment the tension grabs and doesn’t let go. It’s a suspense-filled journey from beginning to end. The world building is fantastic and the characters are three dimensional. Kita thought she’d be going it alone, but she picks up people along the way. The path twists and turns and each time it does more is revealed about this new world, before and after the Forever Winter. Aliens. Figures it would be aliens. I mean, mankind can fuck up this world all on their own. They don’t need aliens to do that. Anyway, this is a story that entertains all the way through. There is a decent stopping point at the end, but it’s obvious the plot is just picking up speed. I look forward to continuing this story in book two.

The beginning of this story is just about perfect. The writing sweeps the reader along, characters shine, and Marella is a wonderful main character. I love every minute I spend in this world. Then Marella and her father head out to sea when her mother goes to the city to be healed. And that’s when the disappointment swells like the ocean in an epic storm. There are secrets revealed which aren’t necessarily a bad thing. However, Marella turns into this whiny petulant brat who thinks she knows what’s best for everyone, especially herself when she has absolutely no clue. If that’s not bad enough, she puts her new friends in danger. I just wanted to ground her until her Thanksgiving Day balloon head deflated. The story arc itself is interesting and unique, but Second Half Marella really ruined the story for me. If you like young adult fantasies with unique settings then give this one a go. Maybe I’m just a nitpicky curmudgeon. ←-strong possibility

My heart! It can’t take this! I’d give my heart to Buddy, in, well, a heartbeat, but I’m afraid it has already melted into a pool of goo.

This book is adorable! I mean, how could it not with that darling cover. Look at it. So cute! But wait, there’s more! In order to save his person, Mieya, from a nasty spell, Buddy must go on a Quest. That’s right, a capital Q-uest. And we all know how important a quest is when it’s in capital. *nods* Oh yeah, this is dangerous stuff here. However, Buddy is no ordinary teddy bear. He is a Knight crafted by none other than the Nameless Wizard. Buddy sets off with a bard and picks up some friends along the way.

This is a book for everyone. I can’t even think of someone who would dislike this. Ok, I can actually think of some people, but I would never be friends with them, so poop on them. Not literally. Ok, yes, maybe literally. Because this book is the teddy bear’s knees. If you’re a fan of heartwarming storylines, dangerous quests, and fantastic characters then do not pass this up.

I listened to this back in August and it has stuck with me. Wolf Larsen is such a brutal man. I don’t care how harsh the conditions out there on the open sea, his brutality is extreme. Yikes. What an asshole. I do admire how he educated himself though and bought himself a ship to hunt seals. Humphrey van Weyden sure gets an education himself at the hands of the Sea-Wolf. The addition of a lady love to the mix strains credulity and the ending is a bit too tidy, but overall this is a tale that has settled into my psyche and I don’t think it will leave for a very long time.
