I read the book Flowers for Algernon. In this book Charlie Gordon, who is mentally retarded, is used in an experiment to make him smart. He works in a bakery and attends school in a school for retarded adults. After his surgery he gets smarter every day, and he meets a mouse called Algernon who had the same surgery as him. As he gets smarter he falls in love with his teacher Alice but he gets fired from his job. Algernon,Charlie, Alice, and his doctors go to Los Angeles to give a speech about Charlie and how he got smart in 6 months. But he begins to forget what he learns. Algernon becomes dumber and he stops eating and dies. He relies what happening he tells Alice that whatever they had has to end because he won't remember his relationship with her. The next day he becomes as dumb as he was and acts like nothing happened.

I would rate this book a 4 or 5. I would rate it a 4 or 5 because it really touched me and it was well written. I think this is a good book for young and old readers. So, I would recommend it. I also like the small twists through the book. like that it wasn’t the ending I thought it was going to be. I do wish that it had a happier ending but it suited the book well.

In the book Execution, Alex, Zee, Simon, and Lucy are taken by the military and experimented on. The are most interested in Zee who is 'immune' the nectar. Alex drifts off and sees Furnaces live in the orchard . Finally they escape the millinery and head to the tower were Furnace is. As they escape, Penitentiary tries to kill them. The military follows them to the tower. Alex makes it to Furnace and he is hooked up to a big machine. Furnace convinces Alex to take his place and he accepts. Now he can control everyone with nectar in its blood. When Zee comes, he convinces Alex to stop and end the war. After a while Alex accepts and then Penitentiary takes all of Alex's blood and she dies. They go back to the military and Alex goes under the knife and becomes human again. Once he is human he tells the story of his life and that's how the book was written.

I would rate this book a 4 1/2 because this one was full of action. I liked the twist in the end of the book. I am glad that Alex became human again and not die like in the Divergent series. Overall, this series wasn't the best written, but it definitely kept me interested throughout all of the books. I am sad that some of my favorite characters died like Toby, Donovan, and Simon. I would recommend it and I'm sad that it's over.
In the book Fugitives Alex, Zee, and Simon escape from the prison. They run as the Swat team and all of Furnace's creatures are on their heels. As they try to figure out what is going on, they find a red-spotted nectar. Now every time a berserker, rat, or black suit bite someone they turn into a creature. As the plague spreads it infects the whole city and spreads to the world. As they try to fight of the creatures they meet Lusy. Lusy and Zee end up falling in love and she joins them on the journey to killing Furnace and ending the war. They make it to the tower where Furnace is supposed to be. Alex runs and meets the Warden. After a big fight Alex kills the Warden and he drinks the Warden's blood and becomes a berserker and he promises to kill Furnace once and for all.

I would rate this book a 3 or 4 because I liked it but not as much as the others. There was a lot of action and I found it very interesting. I like the twists and the way the events are placed in the book. I also think that Lucy is a good character for Zee. Like I said about the other Furnace books, it's not for very young kids. But I would still recommend it. So far I have liked this series very much. I don't think it is my favorite but it is probably in my top 5. So if you like adventure books, read this book!
This is the second book in the ‘Escape from Furnace’ series. In this book, Alex and Zee get out of gen-pop (general population, aka the prison) but end up underground in a huge cave. They gets caught and put in ‘solitary confinement’ for a month. They meet a guy named Simon who was experimented on and so one of his arms is really big. He breaks them out of their confinement and they try to get out through a hole in the celing. That doesn’t work and they get caught. Alex gets experimented on and he turns into a black suit.

Like I said in the last book I really love this series! I would rate it a 4 ½ because it wasn’t as good as the first but I still liked it. I think this book had a little more action in it. But then again this book was kind of predictable. Since the first book, you knew someone was going to be turned into a black suit. Some of the twists or adventures in the book leave me re-reading it over again to see if it really happened. Like I said in the last review, I would recommend this book!
Escape from Furnace is about Alex being framed for killing his friend by ‘Black suits.’ Then, he gets sentenced to life in prison at a place called the Furnace. He meets Donavon, who is his cell mate, and Zee, who he met on the way to the prison. Later on he meets Toby and they make a plan to escape by filling rubber gloves with gas and then blowing a hole in a wall in room two. Room two is a mining room where people were mining and they found a river. The night before they planned their escape Donovan was taken by the Weazers. The Weazers are people who have gas masks sewn onto their faces. They take kids and turn them into dogs and ‘black suits’. At the end, they escape from the Furnace.

I would rate this book a 5 because I LOVED this book!! This is my favorite series because it kept me reading and it was hard to put down the book. It is very action packed and is very interesting. I think this book is good for young adults because it is kind of creepy for little kids. I like the way that there are twists and turns within the book . There are 5 books in this series and each time I finish a book I can’t wait for the next book. I wish the books would never end. I totally recommend it!
I read the Hobbit. It is about Bilbo Baggins’s journeys with Gandolph and the dwarves. It starts with him in his house when Gandolph comes by and marks his door. Later all the Dwarves come to his house. They eat and convince Bilbo to come on the journey with them. They head off on their journey and they meet many different difficulties along the way. They go through a forest on a path where they get lost and run into a lot of spiders. The elves save them from the spiders and take them in for awhile and send them off with supplies to last awhile. Then they find a cave to stay in for the night, but it is really a goblin castle. They get captured and while they are escaping Bilbo gets left behind. He meets Golum and finds a ring that turns him invisible when he puts it on. They meet up and they head to a town where they are captured by wood elves. Bilbo puts on his ring so he wasn’t captured. Once Bilbo makes up a plan to escape he frees them and they get into barrels and flow down the river to another town. The people greet them with open arms and they head to the mountain to kill the dragon. Once they wake the dragon it flies to the town. Bard (one of the townspeople) kills the dragon and is elected king. Later, everyone wants the gold from the cave where the dragon was living and there was a battle. After the battle is over, Bilbo goes home.

I would rate this book a 5 because it was interesting the whole time and it kept me wanting to know what was going to happen. show more Another reason I rated it a 5 was because I liked how the author worded and added detail. I think the book was better than the movie because the movie stretched the book out more than they should. I mean, the movie was great and they put all the details that were needed, but the book had a lot more details. I would recommend it to whoever because it’s a fun read. I think it is for kids that are from 5th grade and older because it might be hard for kids that are younger. The topics might be scary for younger kids, too. show less
I read Call of the Wild. In the book, Buck (the main character), was a domesticated dog who lived on a farm. He was sold to be a sled dog and his life changed forever. Buck was put in a cage for many days until someone would buy him. He was beaten to show that the master had power over him. When someone bought him he was hooked up on the sled. Buck and Spitz (another sled dog) didn't get along from the beginning. When Buck became stronger and more powerful, Spitz was afraid that Buck would overpower him. When they had enough of each other Buck killed Spitz and took the role of lead dog. Then three people bought all of the dogs from the other owners. The three people didn't bring enough food for all of the dogs so the dogs became tired and couldn't pull the sled. Eventually Buck gave up and Jonathan (one of the men) was stabbed. They were left and on the side of the road while the sled left them. The sled broke through the ice and all the dogs and men died. Buck and Jonathan became good friends and went on many adventures together. Buck wanted to go with wolves but loved his new owner too much. When Jonathan died, Buck left and joined the wolves.

The book was rated a four. I would rate this book a three because for me it was hard to understand. I couldn't tell if it was being told from the dogs view or third person but about the dog. I would recommend it because it is a classic, but not for young kids. I definitely think it is a good book. I thought the ending was good show more because throughout the book he said that the wild was calling for him. I watched the movie and it was nothing like the book. I would recommend the book over the movie any day. show less
In the book, Eyes of Kid Midas, Kevin (the main character) goes on a field trip with his class. Bertrum, the class bully, beats up Kevin and his friend Josh. The next day Kevin and Josh decide to climb the mountain to prove to everyone that they are brave. They climb all night and when they reach the top Bertrum and Hal (Bertrum's sidekick) are right behind them. They make a mad dash up the mountain but when Kevin and Josh reach the top, Kevin finds a pair of glasses. They run down the mountain and Kevin wishes for ice cream. Ice cream appears from nowhere in his hands. From then on he wished for everything he could ever want. He soon realized that he can't undo anything that he wishes for. The glasses break and every thought that goes through his mind comes true. Now the whole world is mixed up and Kevin doesn't know what to do. The whole world just stops. Even rain drops stop in mid-air. Only Kevin is still moving. Kevin decides to go back to the mountain where he found the glasses and he puts them back. When he opens his eyes he is back to where he was, Kevin, Josh, Bertrum, and Hall were racing up the mountain but this time he didn't pick up the glasses.

The book was rated a three and a half. I think people rated it that way because of the ending. Personally, I liked the ending. When I asked around most people said they did not like the ending. I would rate this book a five because it was really interesting and I wished that it would never end. Sadly, Eyes of Kid Midas show more was the only book and there isn't a sequel but if there was, I would read it the day it came out. I would recommend it for kids because I think this book was written more for kids than adults. show less
Allegiant is the third book in the Divergent series. In the book, Tris and Tobias decide to leave the city. When they escape from the city they find out that their compound that they have been living in is really in a small place in the U.S. They placed people whose DNA was damaged in different sections in the small compound and the people whose DNA has healed are called the Divergent. Tobias and Tris were in a troubled relationship and Tobias befriends Nina (a girl who wants to take down the people who run the compound) but she fails and has been imprisoned. Then Tris, Tobias, and a few friends try to take them down themselves. But when Tris releases a deadly poison to kill everyone, David (the one who is in control of the compound) shoots her in the head and Tobias and all of her friends are very sad but the mission was completed.

The book was rated a three and a half. I would rate this book a four or a five because it kept me interested throughout the whole book. There were some parts near the end that I skipped because there was too much detail or not enough action. I would recommend it because it was well written and a fairly easy read. I think that Allegiant did a good job at ending the Divergent series. I would have liked the ending better if Tris hadn't died, but if she lived there would be more books. I think that this book is a good book for parent and kids.

In the book “The River” (the 2nd book in the Hatchet series) Brain is asked to and do it again. But this time he would be by a lake with Derek. Derek is a teacher who teaches people how to survive in the wilderness. They get dropped off by a lake with everything but a kitchen sink. But Brain sends the plane away and they are stuck with just two pocket knives to survive with. The first night there is a huge thunder storm and Derek is put in a coma by a lightning strike. Brian decides to head down stream to find help for Derek. He finds out that he has to travel just under 100 miles to get to the nearest civilization. He builds a raft for Derek and him. After two days on the raft Brian is tired, sick, and hungry. He blacks out and wakes up to some people pulling him out of the water. He later finds out that Derek was in a low risk coma and that he was ok.

I would rate this book a five because it kept me interested throughout the whole book. I thought that it was very suspenseful and I would definitely recommend it. I liked how the book had unsuspecting turns. The one thing that I would change is the point of view. The book is in third person, but I thought that it would be better if it was in Brian’s point of view. I think it would be better in Brian’s point of view because it would be more interesting. It would have been nice to know what he was thinking and feeling through his adventure.
In this book, I learned how a man named Phineas Gage lives even though he had a pole shot through his head. It all started when he was working on a railroad. His job was to make a hole in the ground, put explosives in the hole, and pack sand of top of that. He had a special stick that was hard and round on one side and small and sharp on the other. As he was packing the sand on the explosives with the round side, he missed and the explosion shot the rod through his cheek and out of his forehead. When he went to the hospital they were amazed that he was still alive. The doctor cleaned and 'dressed' his wounds. Once he was fully recovered he was a changed man. (Literally) Before, he was nice and everyone liked him. But now he was mean and crude. After many tests and experiments they realized that different parts of the brain affect different parts of our personality. Ever since his accident, people learned so much from him. People from our time are learning more about the brain, thanks to him.

I liked this book. I thought that it was interesting. I enjoyed reading the book and learning about the brain. I would personally rate it a 4 or 5 because I think that it was incredible. I mean, how many times do you read about a guy who gets a pole shot though his head and lives? There were some parts of the book that I skimmed. But, there were other parts that I read and re-read in disbelief.
This story was about what the Herdmans did during the school year. The Herdmans are a family of six. They are outlaws who smoke and cause trouble around the school. In the beginning of the school year everyone had a project were they had to pull a name out of a hat. At the end of the year they had to say a few nice things about them. Beth (who is the main character) pulled Imogene who is one of the Herdmans.

One story about the Herdmans is when one of characters has to watch her little brother while her mom is gone. She leaves her little brother outside while she shops. But one of the Herdmans takes the brother and draws on his head.(because he has no hair) When she finishes shopping she realizes that her brother is gone and asks around it anyone saw him. A boy on the street says that he gave the Herdmans 25 cents to see a tattooed baby. (You know the rest of the story...)

Near the end of the year, the same character had to bring her brother to school. The brother screamed, yelled, and held his breath if he didn't have his blanket. During recess all of the kids wanted to see the little boy turn purple so they stole his blanket. Imogene told them to stop and they did. Near the end of the day no one could find the boys blanket. Imogene gave him hers and told them that is was his. On the last day of school they told the person a few nice things that they thought about them. Beth told Imogene that she was brave, patriotic , resourceful, cunning, shrewd and creative.

I show more expected the book to be better than it was. I didn't like the book as much because there were a lot of little stories. I hoped that it would be one long story about Beth surviving school with the Herdmans.I also think that it would have been cooler if it was from the Herdman's perspective instead of Beth's. But I still enjoyed the book because there were some parts that were funny and that kept me interested. I rated this book a 3 because it wasn't great nor was it bad. I do recommend it if you need a short funny(ish) story to read. show less
