Sarah James, Chairperson of the Gwich'in Alaskan Coastal Plains Steering Committee.
This is a book about catholicity. I hope you will not put it down too quickly if you are not Catholic, because it is not exactly about the Catholic Church but about 'catholicity' or awareness of how sun, moon, stars, Kepler, Saturn, maple trees, muddy rivers, amoeba, bacteria, and all peoples of the earth form a whole. 'Catholicity' is from a Greek word, 'katholikos', which means "of the whole" or "a sense of wholeness". This book is about wholeness and wholemaking that emerges from the nexus of catholicity, cosmology and consciousness.
One of the many marvelous things about Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment, "Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home," is that it is written in a very accessible style. It does not read like an academic tome as did many encyclicals of the past. Anyone who can read a newspaper can read this encyclical and get something out of it.
The impact of the encyclical is going to be significant even outside the Catholic church. Environmentalists and scientists have endorsed the document. Likewise, non-Catholic religious leaders are eager to discuss the encyclical, which will become a topic of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.
Australia's Poisonous Plants, Fungi and Cyanobacteria is the first full-colour, comprehensive guide to the major natural threats to health in Australia affecting domestic and native animals and humans. This book is written in a straightforward style making it accessible to a wide audience including farmers, veterinarians, agricultural advisors, gardeners, horticulturists, botanists and park rangers, medical practitioners and paramedics, teachers, parents and pet owners.
he Nature of Plants tells how plants adapt to the challenges of their habitats. Plants may live in places that provide too little rainfall, yet they thrive, either by evading drought, like the animals that live in deserts, or by tolerating the scarcity. There are plants that use other plants, climbing on them, strangling some, living in their leafy canopies, or parasitizing them. And The Nature of Plants explores the love-hate relationships that plants have with animals, some feeding on plants but others drawn into serving plants by pollinating them, scattering their fruits and seeds, or being eaten themselves. The mostly hidden associations that plants have with bacteria and fungi are also revealed. Illustrated throughout with superb color photographs, it is written in a way that is clear to anyone who wishes to understand the life of plan
The tropical belt - where large areas of South East Asia, India, Africa and parts of both North and South America are located - forms the biggest landmass in the world and has one of the highest numbers of rapidly developing cities. Coincidentally, architecture in these regions shares common problems, the most easily identifiable being the tropical conditions of climate and natural environment.
From the experience of restoring the highly polluted, abandonned industrial site which was to become the site of the Sydney Olympics and then being commissioned to repeat the miracle for Barangaroo, Simon and Elke Haege have extracted a series of principles and suggested prodeedures that every landscape architect, contractor and soil supplier needs to know accurately specify and manufactgure soils for landscape projects. Schools have often accepted questionable fill onto their sites for a quick fix in providing more flat playing surfaces or have modified the ground levels without being aware of the degradation this can cause to their own sites or downstream in their catchments. This book is a good reference to recommend to their design professionals as they become more intentional about restoring their ecologies and catchments.
A very useful book in dismissing common misconceptions about poor soils in Australia as regards natives, the interface of organics and biodiversity, farmlands and forests. Easy to read book raising appreciation of what has actually gone on and what is going on in gardening and farming in Australia. The author talks about garden escapees, and collector damage to forests. This is a book helping to create a new consciousness about ecological gardening.
