Staff - This book started out very strongly if somewhat disturbing with memorable characters. Three quarters of the way through the book I lost my interest when the angel girl came down and took over someone else's body. The ending was anticlimactic. I would recommend it for grade 9 and 10 academic or applied classes - Mr. Diamond.
This is my most treasured book. The story is compelling, the characters unforgettable and Ms. Bronte's use of diction is precise and opens a window into specific facts of the world of Regency Era writing. What separates this book from Austen's many tales is a protagonist who is working class and struggling with her lot in life. We see Jane's journey from orphan, to teacher, to governess to homeless to inheriting a fortune that allows her to be free and independent without losing her personal convictions. Reading this book will not only exhilarate your spirit but improve your lexicon. Shoo! Go read this now! - Ms. Avery
How would it feel to be dropped in the middle of the Big Island in Hawaii with a group of your friends? Pretty cool, eh? Okay, now how would you feel if that happened and you were less than one centimetre tall? Not so cool. In this action-packed thriller, secretly developed advanced technology helps create a feverish spin on the theme of man versus nature. Seven university students stumble upon this new shrinking technology and are subjected to it and disposed of in the heart of Hawaii. It’s a race against time, monstrous insects, and the elements to see if they can somehow make their way back to the lab, reverse the shrinking process, and bag the bad guys! This is an excellent read for anyone that likes a fast-moving, adventurous plot. Think Hatchet with an attitude! Four out of five pickles. - Mr. Mahnic
Five year old Lavinia, an orphan after her parents and brother tragically die on the boat ride over from Ireland, is raised by Negro slaves on a southern plantation. Her time spent in the "kitchen house" makes her a strong-willed and strong-armed young lady, making her later transition back into white society troublesome. I found Lavinia and Belle two of the most powerful characters in literature, the weight of their struggles put wholly on my own shoulders. Lively characters, an intriguing story, and troublesome themes make this a must-read.
