i despise an unnecessary third act breakup but i understand the reasoning for this one. i think they could have worked everything out together, but that might just be the hopeless and pathetic love monster that lives within. either way, this was lovely and vulnerable and very real.

the villain was society? or maybe valérie’s grandmother.
i loved this. silvia moreno-garcia heard us complain that there isn’t enough yearning in romance and decided to do something about that

“It is a system too large and pernicious to be abolished simply through an accumulation of little acts of solidarity and generosity. In fact, it requires a radical series of structural transformations that would render such institutions obsolete.”
the organizing i’m a part of focuses on tenant unions, so i read this hoping there would be some useful guidance. i was not disappointed. i guess i hadn’t really realized how similar these organizing spaces are but so much of what was in this book could be directly related to tenant union organizing. great read.

This book had me cackling and two pages later I had to focus on my breathing (iykyk). So glad I didn’t read this in public because the spice level is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. Usually with such good spice, the rest of the story and character development is forgotten about, but not in this book. The story was great, the characters were well written, and I became so invested in even the side characters. Just a really good combination of everything a story needs. I’ve already recommended to all my friends.

phenomenal. every single person should read this tbh. this story showed the effects of slavery from all angles in such a compassionate and heart-wrenching way.
