Oscar Wilde's Last Stand: Decadence, Conspiracy, and the Most Outrageous Trial of the Century by Philip Hoare
Interesting subject, badly written.
A great and concise summary of the ongoing militarization of Canada. The following quote is the mentality of 21st century Canadian exceptionalism in a nutshell:
We were peacekeepers, so now we are fit to overthrow other people’s governments; we embraced diversity through multiculturalism, so now we appropriate the ability to decide who may be included in the global political community and who will remain unassimilable, beyond the borders of civility; we were skeptical and derisive of the bombastic nationalism of our neighbours, so we increasingly gloat about the humility that supposedly makes us different.(111)
I love silence, but I'm also of very limited means so I live in an apartment with paper thin walls next to a busy highway AND a railroad. Maitland is from the upper class and can afford to buy a new house every couple of years and go on exotic vacations anywhere she pleases, and sure enjoys telling you about it. Annoying, banal, repetitive, self-indulgent, pseudo-mystical goop.
