The original S.D.N. Theory of Music is a foundational 1906 textbook by James W. Acuff, William D. Evridge, and Emmett S. Dean. It was heavily used by the Southern Development Normal (SDN) School in Waco, Texas, to teach vocal music, harmony, and sight-singing to gospel music students in the early 20th century. The abbreviation generally refers to the Southern Development Normal school, which was founded by gospel music pioneer F.L. Eiland. The book itself acts as a traditional rudiments guide, covering essential musical mechanics including:Staffs and clefsRhythm and time signaturesIntervals, scales, and chordsVocal sight-reading techniquesToday, the work is considered an important vintage piece in the history of American gospel music and the Restoration Movement (Churches of Christ). You can read or access a historical copy of the book through the Abilene Christian University Digital Commons.
