This story takes place in 1981 in Guatemala, during the time of their civil war. The story revolves around a boy named Carlos and he has decide when its time for him to grow up and become a man. So he can defend his village from the soldiers that frequently come there, but his mother tells him that she does not want him to for he is still her little boy. The book is a good read and can be graphic at times.
This story is an amazing story about friendship, and its a story that a lot of kids read about growing up. Its about a spider and a pig who become great friends and they find out that wilber is being raised to be slaughtered and Charlotte promises to come up with a plan to save his life. The story teaches children that its not always about themselves and that friendship and making friends is essential in life and something they should always cherish.
George is a controversial story but a good one. It is a bout a transgender girl named George, she was born a boy but whats everyone to view her as a girl. The main problem in the story is george fears what her mother would say or think if she told her, her secret, George's brother already knows the truth and so does a school friend of hers. This books shows the difficult life that a family faces when immigrating to unknown places to them. In this case Ha and her family immigrate to the united states. It is here that they are greeted by people differently, some positive and some negative. Ha also has a difficult time at school as she is bullied everyday by the same kid until she is forced to defend herself. The setting of the story mostly takes place in Alabama. The story is also done in the first person point of view, in some areas.
A very good book with a different twist the the classic story you hear of Noahs ark. This story goes into deeper details and maybe some things Noah may have had to deal with on the ark and it starts with the devil in the form of a mouse chewing the wood so that water can flood the ark. When Noah throws a glove at the mouse to stop it it turns into a cat that grabs the mouse with its mouth. Noah did not tolerate fighting on the ark so much to the cats surprise he threw both the mouse and cat overboard but the cat found its way back.
I really liked this book because it was interesting. The story depicts what these people believe how the milky way came to be. It was about this great spirit dog that would come and eat an old couples cornmeal. The villagers decided to scare it so that it would never come back and when they did the spirit dog leaped into the sky and ecery piece of cornmeal that it dropped from its mouth in the sky turned into a star.
Hansel and Gretel is a story that goes way back, im unsure of what happens in the classic version of hansel and gretel. In this story Hansel and Gretel, the two children initially walk into the woods looking for strawberries to eat. They then ended up eating all the strawberries they found and fell asleep only to awaken in front a castle of the witch that eats children. The witch then locked hansel into a cage and told gretel to prepare the pot to cook him. But while the witch was not looking gretel freed hansel and they were able to get away.
Miro lived in a kingdom of the incas and she mostly did things around her brothers and she took care of the llamas on their property. Miro would grow stronger in home and she even learned the languages of the birds she decided to take on the challenge of finding a lake that had healing powers that no one had ever found before to save the prince that was from the royal city.
This is a wonderful tale about a rabbit that is off to see his grand mother. The little rabbit goes on an adventure to get to his grandmothers house and along the way he runs into a few different animals that want to eat him for lunch. He runs into a tiger, a lion, and a fox. He fools them into letting him go by saying that they do not want to eat a skinny rabbit, wait till he comes back from eating all the food that his grandmother will give so he will be nice and fat. Then he comes back rolling in the barrel telling each of the animals that there is a fire so they would leave him alone and he rolls all the way back down the mountain until he is home again.
The story is about a little red hen who finds a little green seed. She then looks for other people to help her plant and care for the seed that later becomes a big tree. Where she chooses to lay her egg for her baby hen. The red hen was rejected by all her friends when it came to taking care of the tree so when there kids came to play she had told them that she would not open the gate for them to come in. The baby hen however told her that, that would be mean of her and she agreed and i feel like it sends a message of treating others how you would like to be treated.
The book is very educational and can serve a purpose to students on how the scientific method may work. It also shows the process that some scientists may follow to try and come to a conclusion of why things happen , in this case they were trying to figure out what killed the Coelophysis. The came went over through every situation, drowning in water, getting stuck in quick sand, poison, volcanic eruptions and meteors. It explains how they tried to test each hypothesis and deciding whether it was possible or not.
This story is about a little girl who is blind but she shows that she does not let that stop her from seeing the world. She uses her imagination to depict everything she wants to see as she get off of each train. Whether it be good or bad she sees it and its very lovely to know that she does this. She even says how she uses her other senses to depict images in her head and i think its wonderful how she shows that she does this and does not let the fact that she is blind stop her from adventuring in life. In whatever way she chooses that to be.
This is a very interesting book, i do not know much about cajun cultures. But the book has a style to it with how it is written that i know is very accurate to when it comes to the accent or the way cajuns speak. This is a book that i would read to children because it can easily keep their interest because of what the book is about. Pierre the alligator begins to live with people that treat him as their pet until he meets another alligator that later becomes his wife and they have children.
This is a collection of poems that you would most likely to children at bedtime. The poems add a sense of imagery and for some a sense of adventure for children, The can put themselves in the position of those in the poems. Some of the poems may be a little more difficult for a younger audience to understand as most of them are not as straight forward as others. My favorite is windy nights, mostly because of how the illustrator depicts him, It reminds me of a hero that i use to watch when i was younger called zorro.
I enjoyed this book a lot, It reminds me of a younger sibling or family member that no matter what you do they always want to know "Why?" Rabbit after everything he does or what bear does asks why, because it seems like he may not understand why certain things happen yet. But i like the fact that it depicts a bear being friends with a rabbit, which i can promise does not happen in real life. But it shows no matter how different the two animals are, they can be friends, i think thats deeper message you can teach children from this book.
The book begins with the number ten and from there works all the way down to zero. Its a great way teach young kids to count from one to ten and even backwards. I love how the end of pages in pairs rhymes. So the pages that start with Ten and Nine rhyme and so on. I feel that written this way keeps the interest of the reader and for children i think they'll like the rhythm the book is written in.
The Boy Who Invented the Popsicle: The Cool Science Behind Frank Epperson's Famous Frozen Treat by Anne Renaud
This story is written about Francis (Frank) William Epperson, who is the inventor of the Popsicle. Frank as depicted in the book shows a strong interest in inventing things from a young age, he would always try to build different type of contraptions, but one day he started making flavored drinks. The story depicts frank a young child who then out of curiosity wonders what these tasty treats would taste like frozen. When he froze the drinks, is when he invented the popsicle. I love how the author depicts a child who discovers this treat out of curiosity and it sends a message to kids that, even they could come up with something out of no where and make it big.
The book contains a few good poems and mostly the poems follow what the little girl does throughout her day at home. The Poems also show how her home is a home and how she even has her own hideaway place in the house. It just depicts how cozy a home can be.
This book shows is a great story. It depicts a man that was deaf and worked at a newspaper press, where there were also other people who were deaf but not everyone. Those who could hear treated the man a little different mostly because they were unable to do sign language so they could not communicate with him. Little did they know that this man would go on to save their lives because he had spotted a fire that had started in the building. He was able to get the attention of many people warning them of a fire and they were able to spread the word to everyone and no one was harmed.
Such an amazing book, it really shows the ups and downs of those who suffer from disabilities, but not only that what they are capable to do when one exercises patience and is willing to help them learn. Which was the case here for Helen, her parents had no idea how to help Helen as she grew angry, out of frustration im sure. The teacher really takes her time to teach helen how to flourish and learn how to communicate with others properly.
I Love how this book portrays Stevie to always be a happy and always capable of doing anything. There was this one line that really stuck with me. It was the line that says " through his ears he sees more clearly than most people do with their eyes." This goes to the fact that for blind people their other senses are said to be more enhanced and it truly is amazing to see how it was never shown that he may have felt about being blind but how he found the good with it and how he found something he was certainly amazing at.
Vincent Van Gogh (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (Smart about the Arts (Pb)) by Brad Bucks
i only know some of vincent van goghs work but i am a big fan of the way he does his art. im not really sure what it is about them but they interest me. i already knew some of the things that were mentioned in this book because ive down research on Van Gogh before. But it is a good informational book and i really like the style that is written in. I like that it seems to be coming from the point of view of a younger kid.
Its very interesting to see how hard work and persistence can pay off. For Honus wagner he had a dream of playing baseball and he kept trying and trying until he was finally noticed and made his dream come true. The story does a good job to give an idea what life was like for all those years ago, which its very interesting to see that he had to work in a mine after 6th grade, and at the age of only 12 i could never imagine doing work like that.
Its good to see that players like Ronde and Tiki Barber did things when they were kids that the rest of us do and they practiced hard to get where they would end up. I watched a lot of Tiki and Ronde growing up, They were both amazing players, Tiki being a running back for the giants and Ronde being a corner for the Buccaneers. Even though in the story Ronde played offensive line. It just a shows that even professionals at one time were not the best at what they do and took a lot of practice to get there.
This story about Muhammad Ali was really good. Growing up i heard a lot of Muhammad Ali from my parents on how they would always say they had never seen a boxer as good as Ali. I have only been able to see highlights of him on social media and to see why the quote "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" was as famous as it is. but i never knew who Ali was outside of boxing and this story gave me a better look at the kind of man he was. How he would have talks in front of groups of kids and even opened up a camp for kids and would show up to do magic tricks for them.
A real good book, These types of books are always interesting to me, seeing how some of these players get to where they want to go. Overcoming any obstacle in his way Willie Mays was able to become one of the best players to ever play the sport of baseball. During that time as an African American they were not given the opportunity to play professional baseball and even when they began to be allowed to they still were looked down on. so its great to hear the story on how he overcame that and showed the world how great of a player he was.
I really liked this book for the fact that the author, although saying the same things in english and spanish was able to intertwine the two kids in one story. You could tell this at the end when the two boys meet at the end but one speaking english and one speaking spanish. Children could use the pictures to match up what was said in spanish and what was said in english as the book went a long. I really enjoyed the style that the author wrote this book in.
