Although the author seems amused more than anything else by the life of J P Migne, he (or his editor) does not hesitate to draw hasty conclusions and make raw assertions about Migne's character and motives. For example, the very title gets little support from the textual evidence Bloch himself discusses. Plagiarism by definition excludes citing one's sources, which Migne did pretty consistently, as the author admits. A few slips of reference amid the massive OED-like extent of Migne's work does not in any way show he should be known for plagiarism! Add to this a few slights the author makes against the middle ages and the Church, and one suspects he's opening himself up to suspicions of motive--just as he would have us think about Migne.
