I initially rated this as 3.5, but honestly I keep thinking about it. I'm not even sure what I considered for the first rating, but a book that I can't stop thinking about deserves a 6. FWIW, I'm pretty sure my love of Lois Duncan books as a teen has a lot to do with this.
Extreme "One Twue Way" book.
As evidenced by what shelf I put this on... I had to quit reading it. It's written so poorly! Even the first few chapters wouldn't make any sense to anyone who didn't already know the details about the crime. Of course it's possible it actually gets better, but the first few chapters are entirely about how the author felt covering the trial and not about the trial itself, the crime, nor about child murderers in any sense.
Have you heard the "joke" Playboy? I read it for the articles!
It's true. The interviews, in particular, are outstanding. As someone who subscribed to Playboy for years, I'd hoped that compilations of the interviews existed somewhere and finding that they did, they did not disappoint.
Honestly, I didn't give five stars because I doubt these were THE best comedian interviews. Only one woman? One or two that were kind of meh? Still, worth reading.

So much potential lost
Great idea; poor platform
Would have been great as, perhaps, a wiki, a website
Why recommend places where women cannot travel without a male companion?? NO advice on how safe a locale is for women, in particular.
Sometimes a chapter is a place, sometimes it's a "genre" -- confusing
Sometimes the "woman" connection is totally missing. It's just a recommended place to travel.
And the index is useless on the e-book. A list of words. No page numbers, no links.
OTOH, I DO think this would be a great wiki.

Does this kind of book appeal to you? Read others like it? Then I think you'll love this one. If you're reading it because you are actually worried about dangers in the world, you'll probably feel like some other reviewers whose reviews I have read -- What the heck? This book claims everything, even complete opposite actions, are dangerous.
Yes. Because that's true. If you find that amusing, though, this book is great.
AND IT HAS CITATIONS FOR EVERYTHING!!!
Wow. Again an if statement... if you understand how amazing that fact is, you'll love this book.
LOVE it.

Ever felt completely left out of a group OR at blame for a huge even, which, in reality, you didn't have anything to do with? Or which you actions were misinterpreted? Like a book that makes you cry?
THIS book is for you.
I don't know how people who have never experienced the above situations would feel about this book, so I can't speak for them. But, if those descriptions resonate with you and you enjoy a good cry, than you will love this book.
I feel refreshed. (The making me sob part moved it from 4 to 5 stars; so take that into consideration when thinking about whether you think a good cry is pleasant and relaxing or not!)

I've never been a fan of fiction that has mostly characters who are, overall, unlikeable. Six Feet Under. The Sopranos. And... some other very popular book that I just couldn't like and can't remember the name of right now.
I liked this book. A lot. The two main characters are both icky (yes, I spend time thinking of a good word to describe both of them) and yet I never stopped wanting to know what was going to happen next.
I've read complaints that people don't like the "unreliable narrator" technique. I don't want to give away anything, but I will say that I don't think that's an accurate description for Flynn's writing here. It's something different.
I've read that some disliked the ending. I thought it was entirely appropriate and fitting and IF you accept the reality of the rest of the tale, the only believable ending there could be.
I absolutely loved this book. I would not recommend it to just anyone. Do you like twisted, bizarre, psychological cruelty? Then this book is for you.
Btw, this book had a different tone than her previous two books, IMO. The others were more depressing and dark in tone. This one is more depressing and dark in plot, but not tone. Thought it was worth mentioning.

Filled with tension. The novel goes back and forth between two time periods in the main character's life. Each period highlights a different type of tension and suspense. The earlier time period deals with an increasingly violent and abusive relationship and the fear involved. The second section's tension mostly revolves around the OCD the main character has developed as a result of the experiences from the first part.
It sounds odd writing it out, but reading this book made me SO anxious and that was a great thing. Who wants to be anxious, right? But the author somehow expresses the main character's anxiety that well. I consider that pretty damn good writing.
It's difficult to review this book without giving anything away, IMO. If you like authors like Tanya French, Sophie Hannah, Gillian Flynn, and/or Chevy Stevens, you will very likely enjoy this book.

Could've been much higher on the star scale, but NO index, and NO footnotes nor endnotes. No, a bibliography does not suffice.
I know I liked this series in the past, but this one leaves me bored. I want to read MORE. I need to quit reading books I don't find intriguing more often. Quite reading, FWIW, on page 243.
I may have liked this book better back when I read a series closer together in time. IOW, there are just too many references in this book that I can't recall whether or not are parts of earlier books or not. It was frustrating.

I am in awe that this book exists. I first read its beginning on reddit's /nosleep and was just as enthralled as everyone else who read it. I can't wait to read the novel-version, as I'm beginning it right now. I haven't been this excited to *start* a book since I can't remember when!!!
After reading: :-( It just wasn't as good as reading it on reddit. I'm positive that some additional explanations are missing that made it creepier and... it just wasn't the same. I was hoping for MORE, not less.
I still think that the author has a lot of potential and should write more. I recommend people who thought this sounded like a good book go read the original on reddit.com/r/nosleep The original really was amazing.

The extremely poor translation ("You son of a dog!" Really??) distracts from the story. The book presents as already fact some technology that has not been perfected yet. There's no need for that -- it's stuff that could very well be true soon and it wouldn't be difficult to have presented it as ahead of its time, like the cinematic techniques were. I can't help but wonder if that, too, was a result of the awful translation.
If you can ignore that, and I think it's more easily ignored by some than others, it's a good thriller! I just wish my French were good enough to read the original.

A novel FULL of OMGWTFs.
As always, Hannah's latest is chock full of twists and turns and edge-of-the-seat WTFs. And with the recurring characters Charlie and Simon, those are both WTF-is-WRONG-with-these-people types as well as WTF-I-wasn't-expecting-that types.
You should know that unless you start at the beginning of the series the Charlie+Simon relationship will make no sense. Nor, I suppose, will a lot of the side comments about others at the police station, come to think of it.
However, if you've been reading the series all along, this is a great addition. It's the 6th in the series and unlike lots of series books, a later addition doesn't mean a worse work. I haven't actually thought to rank all of the series, but this is one of the best ones so far.
Oh, and for American readers, be ready to look up some phrases and words. :-)

Disappointment coming from Deaver. Would have been ok, probably, from someone else. I have high expectations for Deaver, though! Using lyrics as hints, fictionalizing a real-life entertainment event, the twist mostly given away in the jacket cover... :-(
Both a typical medical epidemic thriller and a unique potential apocalypse story. The infection is SO different that the medical/scientific reality or possibility can't really be judged. If you like this genre, you'll enjoy this book. Otherwise, probably not. I couldn't believe there was actually a fairly satisfactory resolution to the book, when I had just pages left and was certain it was all going to be unexplained! All I could think is that there wasn't enough pages left for me to end to book feeling satisfied. Amazingly, the author pulled it off.
I don't want to give spoilers, but there was another impressive thing the author did. In one of the sub-stories, I couldn't help but wonder why a character wasn't doing or trying something that seemed *obvious* if this was happening in today's time and considering the character's career. The author then both incorporated that "missing" action and explained why it hadn't happened earlier, as well. Sorry to be so vague, but I really appreciated that it wasn't a sort of negative deux ex machina.
Oh, and as soon as I read about the "threads" in the skin as a symptom, I thought of Morgellons. LOVE that this incorporates that.

I love both medical thrillers and apocalyptic novels, so this was right up my alley. It satisfied those tastes, but meh, that was it. The "bad guys" weren't very convincing. There were too many easily mixed up characters -- not distinct enough for me to remember exactly who was who. A solid three stars. No more, no less.
Laura Lippman is a writer with a unique voice that I happen to enjoy. It always takes me a while to get "into" her books.... I start reading thinking, 'Meh, this is ok' and end up really being drawn into her stories.
The ending of this book is both a twist AND not unexpected. It feels natural. A twist that isn't unrealistic, I guess.
I know that not everyone remembers their childhood thoughts as well as others do. If you are one of those people who DO remember well, you'll find her writing nostalgic. Not sure if that's the right word exactly. Accurate-nostalgic-believable.
I'm not sure that I would recommend this as a first intro to Lippman's books, but if you're a fan already, you'll enjoy it.

Meh. It's ok. Actually, it's lots of boring stuff, some incredibly egotistical snobby stuff, and a few bits of brilliance.
I'd be willing to bet that that's how a lot of people would view this book and that the pieces assigned to each of those categories would differ from one reader to the next.

Intplibrarian NOT as good as all of her other books that I've read so far. Yes, there are twists, but they were either predictable or confusing. And I just can't give more then 3 stars to a book that claims vaccinations are dangerous without adding any more info than that as though you should accept it as fact. There's also a huge error in a matter of statistics that is fine insofar as the character believes it, but not ok with me that the mistake is never pointed out to the readers.
Also, for someone who has read all of her books so far, there wasn't enough about Charlotte and Simon!!

Could have been exponentially better if only it had had pictures! I kept referring to Wikipedia while reading the book to get an idea of what each plant looked like and where it was usually found, but that gets tiresome.
I really love this kind of book. Small blurbs that are just enough to get you interested in looking up more information sometimes... but I don't want to do it for each and every entry!
The book is a lot of fun to read. As a fan of books like The Book of Lists and that sort of genre, it's right up my alley. BUT, if there's any book that *needs* pictures more... . Maybe another enhanced edition is possible? I really think that if it had only had pictures, I would be complaining about not being able to give MORE than five stars.

Many tragedies I already knew about, but this book made me remember them, which is a good thing. They shouldn't be forgotten. Also made me want to read more about some of them. I would have liked a "for more information, read..." at the end of each entry, but Wikipedia's helping me with that anyway.
Couldn't stop reading it and I did love it. Four instead of five stars because I felt the author was working up to a twist that never came. Still loved it, though.
The writing just draws you in. I would have finished it in one sitting if I hadn't had to go to sleep!
This book would have been a GREAT Twilight episode.
I felt it was lacking as a book, though. It's compelling. I almost wanted to just skim it so that I could find out what was going to happen faster -- and it's a very short book to begin with. However, I was disappointed when I did get to the end. The author drops the twist/explanation on you and then that's it. The end.
I feel like the author wrote out an outline of his plot, and it's a good one, and then added paragraphs to it instead of really fleshing it out.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Some of the entries made me want to write an essay in response. Some made me want to smack the author upside the head. Some made me want to hug the author. Or any combination thereof. A few others were too boring to finish, even if they were only a few pages long.
I'd be surprised if there was anyone who couldn't find *anything* interesting and worthwhile in this collection. I'd be even more surprised if there was anyone who didn't abhor or, at least, find coma-inducing, in the collection.
Take that as you will.

However, I can't give it more stars because it has almost no citations or references. There are also at least a few errors in the book, but I don't know for sure if that's because the book's info is outdated or if it was wrong at the time it was written, too.
If the book had provided sources, though, I would have given it 5 stars!
