Suzanne Woods Fisher is a well-established author and typically produces high quality fiction novels. This one, a standalone, is loosely based on facts but steps away from being historical fiction with the focus on characters and minimal focus on what the Moonlight School was. I feel that if there were part of a series there would be so much more room for building off the title, delving into the relationships between certain characters, and providing a full story with no loose ends. As expected, the writing is well done and the characters are well fleshed out. If you are looking for an enjoyable story about characters, their relationships, trials, and discoveries, this will fit that bill. If you are curious and are looking to discover more about historical elements, you may feel disappointed. There are about four pages of information and two pages for clarifying facts at the end which may satisfy that desire for historical information. This review is solely mine and my honest opinion. I received a review copy through the publisher in exchange for an honest review. No additional compensation has been, or will be, provided.
I have read Lynn Blackburn’s novels before so I had some expectations of what I would find in this one. Unknown Threat is the first in the series Defend and Protect so there is ample room for building the characters and suspense. Thankfully, even though there is law enforcement and such, there are no political standings put forth so anyone can enjoy this without feeling “the other side” is sending a message. I felt the characters were well constructed and the first layers were revealed with more fleshing out to come in future installments. I am hopeful that the moments that felt somewhat blunted will have an explanation in the next book. The case itself was intriguing and added a lot to the enjoyment of the read. I felt the interactions and inside looks within the agencies were detailed and accurate. I feel there is a lot more to come, and additional suspense and character development, in the coming series installments. This is reinforced with the first five pages of the next book that were included at the back of this one. This review is solely my personal opinion and belongs entirely to me. This is a handy guide designed to be shared and referred to repeatedly. I like that it is laminated so that it can endure being handled many times by multiple people. It's a general guide with a lot of information for the content with references to find additional information. I like that the important points were included and that it made a point of the importance of having the parents involved. This could be used both in a school system and in the homeschool environment.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. My son and I read this book together and really enjoyed what it had to offer. We both learned a lot about why our minds work the way they do. The examples and exercises were very helpful. I feel this can be used by teachers, parents, and homeschoolers, to learn how to think more openly and not allow others to inhibit the way we think and learn.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Excellent book with really good selections that can easily be expanded upon by teachers or homeschool parents/teachers. I really like the choices of authors and the simplicity of using the material and coming up with an evaluation of the students work (grading). I have a 7th grader who tests at 12th grade and have found it difficult to challenge him. This book really helps and now we are looking for a more advanced reading comprehension edition.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. To Be Gifted and Learning Disabled: Strength-Based Strategies for Helping Twice-Exceptional Students With LD, ADHD by Susan M. Baum
This book is a mixed bag. There are a lot of good aspects. There is a significant need for a way to teach children who can be labeled as both gifted and learning disabled. Very few schools have anything in the system that can be adapted for these children to teach/train them with the proper type and level of support. The book covers several ideas and ways to reach them. There are also some aspects of the book I really did not like. It really seems like the authors don't understand what autism really is. It's a broad diagnosis but they seem to lump it all under one label. I feel they are way off mark with their comments about autistic kids and the interventions and educational recommendations they offered. As a parent of two very different children, both labeled under the autism umbrella, I can say without a doubt that they required much different methods. Had they been taught the same way, or how this book describes, neither would have been successful.
That said, there are some good ideas for teaching unique children. It's just not very accurate with how they place these children or how they classify learning styles. A child can have multiple personality patterns and learning styles, not just one as the book implies.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Excellent resource with easy to implement examples and ideas. This is a great resource for both the homeschool parent/teacher and the classroom of a typical school. While some ideas may present issues in some communities, the vast majority of ideas and methods can be utilized. I found the book both informative and helpful.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Using the National Gifted Education Standards for Pre-K–Grade 12 Professional Development by Susan Johnsen Ph.D.
This is a good resource for a teacher or group looking into possibly developing a gifted program. It is rich in research, but lacks in any ideas or content otherwise. This is not for the teacher who already has gifted students or programs, nor is it for the homeschool community looking for how to implement education for gifted students. Perhaps this would be useful for those trying to provide the data to support a gifted program and the benefits for such a program.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. As an avid NASCAR fan, I was devastated when I watched Dale's last race. My heart went out to his family and fellow fans. It was difficult to pick up the remote and watch the next race without Dale. I'm glad I did though, and I'm glad I won this book through LibraryThing. It wasn't easy reading the entire book but overall it left me feeling a touch healed. For those who weren't there for that last race, the book is informative and entertaining without going into too much depth and becoming boring.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I love knowing how things work, as does my son (12). We enjoyed reading through this book and feel it would make a great reference book for mechanics. The text is easy to read and understand with no complicated language. There are plenty of photos, diagrams, charts, etc., to help the reader grasp all of the topic. While I doubt I'll ever work on my truck's engine in the depth this book provides, I do feel I could use it to understand more about it and possibly fix issues related to timing, starting, exhaust and oil. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is a collection of essays and research on our understanding of creativity written at a scholarly level. Each chapter has key points for the reader to remember, which is helpful and a lot less dry than just researching and reading. There is a wealth of evidence indicating the lack of creativity in the classroom is having a detrimental effect on students and teachers. Change needs to happen in our education system, a change that encourages creative thinking. This book contains evidence that backs up the importance of creativity and innovation, in the classroom and beyond. I received an ARC through Library Thing in exchange for an honest review.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. The audiobook is well dictated, easy to understand with a pleasant tone. The content is interesting, especially if you are a fan of Charlotte Brontë. The information sounds well-researched and for the most part is interesting to listen to.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I really enjoy books that pull you into the plot from the start and fill in the other bits of the story as you read. The characters were unique and interesting to learn about. I like the various threads that were woven into the book along with the primary plot thread. The suspicion and other-worldly elements added to the feel of the read. There seems to be a bit too much effort into keeping the guessers from predicting anything which makes for a bit of a winding type of read. A few less switches and twisting turns and the book would easily earn another star. There is rarely a moment where there isn't something going on. Overall this is a good read and certainly something many readers will enjoy. I received an ARC through library thing in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I honestly did not enjoy reading this book. I gave it several attempts as I feel a book I struggle with might not present a struggle when read in a different frame of mind. For me it felt like there was a disconnection between the narrator and the reader which wasn't fully recovered when the point of view was altered. It became a chore to work through the book which I simply do not have time for. For those who have endless hours to dissect and digest what they are reading, it may well be rather enjoyable. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. We found this book to contain a decent range of educational material for the intended student grade. Overall it is a good resource and one we can recommend for those looking for an alternate option or for home-school students.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book took a bit of effort to stick with through the first half. That's not to say it's badly written, in fact I feel that the book is quite well written. For me the first half felt jerky and lacked that smooth flow that makes the read enjoyable. About half-way through, maybe a touch further, the story and characters started to feel more like they were part of a story with a solid plot. The style makes it feel a bit disjointed to me although I suspect this won't be an issue for many readers. It's more of a personal preference thing than any fault of the author. The topics covered, while vast, each receive proper attention and help drive the overall story. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion, which is my own and may or may not reflect your own.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. For those of you with squeamish stomachs or those who avoid tales of human suffering, please pass by this book. For those of you who love Lovecraft, King, Crouch, Koontz, Barker, or whomever your favorite horror author is, you just might want to pick this one up. I don't know how it is that I've never read a Braunbeck novel prior to this one since I love horror as a genre. There are a few bits within that are definitely for the stronger willed but overall this is a gem. The rest of the bits are absolutely wonderful to read. I've now added Braunbeck to my list of horror authors to keep a collection of their books in print in my personal library. His craft is handled with skill and a mastery of the English language. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I never received the ARC however a friend had purchased the book and had this to say about it: "The book is ok to read. There are some really good ideas the author tried to put into the story. For the most part they worked out. I liked it enough to look into purchasing additional books by this author."

I received an ARC through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. I admit I was excited to be able to read this book. It should have been thrilling and full of excitement. Instead, it took me ages to slog through it. The fact side of things clearly has been researched and is well understood by Clarke. I felt he had a complete grasp of how things work and what each position is responsible for. The writing is ok; it's free of grammatical issues and is easy enough to read and understand. The plot, while containing a couple bits that were a touch over the top, was intriguing and should have been exciting to read. Where this book falls apart is the execution of the characters. For me they felt more like cardboard cutouts and lacked any true fleshing out. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to connect with the characters or to care anything about them. When there is no connection there is very little enjoyment in the read. This in my opinion, which may or may not mirror your own.

Top Secret Files: Pirates and Buried Treasure: Secrets, Strange Tales, and Hidden Facts about Pirates (Top Secret Files of History) by Stephanie Bearce
My son (11) prefers non-fiction for his reads so it wasn't difficult to get him to read this one. He read it during a car trip while I listened to an audiobook, or at least tried to. He loved telling me about the new things he learned while reading this book then asked if he could take it to school. Of course I obliged his request. Seeing him happy with a book in hand is all I needed. I looked through the book briefly and liked the layout and how everything is presented. This would make a great book for a child's library, or an adult who likes an easier way to learn about pirates. I can see this being a popular book in a school library as well. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Fun engaging read. Well written. Charismatic Characters add to the reading enjoyment. Intriguing plot with good flow. This book went over very well with the patrons at our library. A request has been put in for the rest of this series. Fingers crossed!
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Adorable story with nicely done colorful drawings on each page. Reinforces positive messages with a short list in the back as a reminder. This is a solid choice for a children's book and one I can easily recommend. Children need positive role models in everything, especially in the books they read. This book makes a great addition to a child's library. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

Everyone who gets into the water to swim can benefit from even a light reading of this book. The section on nutrition can be used by anyone in any sport. The book is set up with various sections devoted to that particular topic so finding what you want to learn about is easy. I like that it can be used by the swimmer, the coach, the parent or just about anybody with no complicated high-tech ways of saying things. I was eager to be able to read this book since my son (10) is an avid swimmer and swims in USA Swimming sanctioned competitions (meets). This is a reference I am sure I'll be coming back to time and time again. I like everything about this book and feel I can easily recommend it to others, swimmers or not. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way has influenced my opinion although seeing my son smile upon hearing he can learn ways to be faster sure has.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.Ready-to-Use Resources for Mindsets in the Classroom: Everything Educators Need for School Success by Mary Cay Ricci
This is a wonderful resource that I wish more schools would implement. Too many times I've heard children come in the library after school and say they'll never learn -whatever is currently being taught- because they aren't smart enough. I've heard it over and over how certain demographics reduce intelligence. Sure, the boy down the road born to immigrant parents with no formal education may have a difficult road ahead of him but that does not mean he can't learn complicated math or become a scientist. This book touches on several areas that can be implemented in any classroom regardless of what the school system dictates. I'll be using it with my currently public schooled child. I wish I had something like this when I was homeschooling my older two. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I'm not typically a fan of memoirs as they tend to come across either preachy or like the writer needs to get a grip and grow up. This is far from how Chandler presents her story. The writing is honest, truthful and touching. How anyone can move past such a loss is something I hope to never understand but this is as close as it gets. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has lost a child. Reading the emotion and understanding that you are not alone in this situation is therapeutic and helpful in ways I can't begin to provide words for. Bring tissues. This is an easy read that won't take days to finish. The writing is well thought through with no complex wording or ideas so it's a good fit for all ages and levels of readers. It's a straightforward idea and message fit into a plot that weaves a few threads of suspense and excitement, but only a hint of that genre. Overall it's well written and enjoyable to read in a single sitting. I received an ARC through a LibraryThing giveaway in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.
