Shantaram is undeniably one of the best books I have ever read. Throughout this daunting 900+ page novel I found myself back and forth between unable to put the book down and wishing I could escape from the horrifically detailed events being described. I do warn that you need to have a strong stomach to handle much of the book.
The lyrical language and sincerity of the author made me feel as though I was there with him on the streets of Bombay and I felt a true loss when Prabaker passed away. Hoping for a sequel.
The idea behind this book was great as it no doubt helped spread awareness about Asbergers. Unfortunately, Jodi Picoult seems to be falling into a pattern of formulaic writing which makes her more recent novels less captivating.
