Mary by Nat Cassidy
This book.
I don’t even know where to begin, there are so many well done things in this story.
Mary is a middle age woman on the precipice of fifty. She has no real family or friends saved for her “loved ones”, a collection of porcelain dolls that keep her company. She’s what could be considered a weirdo, but she does her best to be good. And she does a good job of it until a call from her Aunt Nadine forces her to return home. Then all chaos lets lose.
This book was a goldmine. There were funny moments and there were touching moments too. Scenes of philosophical awareness and moments of brutal savagery.
All the characters were so well done. It felt as if they were real people. The dynamic between Nadine and Mary really set the story, and I loved it. I didn’t know where the story would go, and I still am having a hard time wrapping my brain around it.
Reincarnation, cults, serial killers. This book is a whole journey of crazy, but it’s a fun one.
One of my favorite reads of 2023.

When Abitha travels overseas to her new home in a Puritan community in Connecticut, she becomes an outcast. The town sees her as an outsider, her husband, Edward, the only real person who accepts her. When he suddenly perishes, Abitha’s entire life seems to crumble around her until she meets a forest spirit she names Samson. Is he a God or a demon? Her salvation or her damnation?
This was such a good book, but it made me so mad. I hated nearly every human character in this book. The men, Wallace in particular, were so infuriating. I rooted so hard for Abitha from the beginning, and it was hard watching her take blow after blow. It seemed like every time things started to go her way, something else would go horribly wrong.
Because of that, it took me a little while to finish this story, but I loved the end of the book. This whole story reminded me of that movie The Witch because Abitha was both sassy and strongheaded just like the Thomasin.
This was my first book by Brom, but it definitely won’t be my last.

In the future, everything is documented. When a serial killer turns himself in and ropes society into broadcasting his depravity live, anything can happen. And anything does.
The setting that this story takes place in was ominous. A slightly futuristic version of current society with an even stronger technological presence.
The characters were well-fleshed out and the main character, Erin, in particular was easy to root for. I read another review that said the villain, Charles, gave them Hannibal vibes, and I can definitely see it. I loved the whole cat and mouse dynamic between the two. It added to the tension of what would happen next and how Charles was able to pull off all that he did.
All of that still didn’t prepare me for the twist at the end.

A fun slasher story that subverts the typical expectations of the genre. There’s something unsettling about a preppy murderous teenager, and the author does a fantastic job of exploring that avenue.
The characters are well-rounded, and the plot is solid.
Plenty of gore too!

How desperate are you? Some people will do anything to make their dreams come true. For struggling musician, Tommy, he’ll find out the hard way what his limits are.
I literally couldn’t put this book down. I grabbed it out of the mailbox on the way to get my son from school and started reading it in the pickup line. I finished it that night. As a struggling artist myself, I found Tommy to be a very relatable character. His desperate need to make money, to survive and achieve his dreams is something that a lot of people can relate to.
The introduction of the Creator was an intriguing aspect of the story. At first, I didn’t know what to expect of that plot point and thought it might somehow tie into the dark web. The direction the story actually went was far more fascinating.
This was a quick read, but one of my favorites of the year so far. If you’re looking for a story with plenty of intrigue and realistic characters, this is the book for you!

What does the journey into the afterlife look like? This book takes the reader on an interesting journey to find out.
I took my time finishing reading this book because I needed time to process each chapter. It shifts through so many emotions like grief, loss, loneliness, hope, and despair that one sitting feels like an emotional rollercoaster.
This is a dual POV story that flips between the two main characters, John and Lucy. The roles that each of them play in each other’s lives leads to interesting twists and turns. The first half of the book has a completely different feel from the second half of the book, and it’s for that reason that I’m not sure what genre I would classify this as. That only made me love the book more. It was different from mainstream fiction in that it dabbled in both realistic horrors while adding in some paranormal elements as well.
One thing is for sure, this book is guaranteed to have you thinking about what death really means.

Something’s living in the Appalachian wilderness, and it’s losing patience. Bobby Gene will have to use all he’s learned as a shaman to take it on before it destroys everything he calls home.
Spooky and atmospheric, I couldn’t guess what would come next.
I loved the way the main character was written. As an outcast who’s lived in the woods his entire life, he’s relatable, and I found it easy to root for him.

A collection of chillingly disturbing medical horror. Each one is more uncomfortable than the last. There’s something about medical horror that’s always creeped me out, and this collection does a good job of exploring those feelings.
My favorites of the collection were:
AUTOIMMUNE: A man is subjected to a horrific chronic illness.
FAT: A woman is willing to go to extreme lengths to lose weight.
SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE: In an effort to treat hair loss, a woman uses a supplement to regrow her hair that starts her in a horrific cycle of medicine and side effects.
This isn’t a collection to be missed.

When a massive storm hits, a group of locals decides not to evacuate and buckle down to wait it out. What they don’t know is that there’s something in the water. A horror that’s come in with the storm unlike anything they’ve ever experienced.
My favorite horror stories are those that don’t just instill fear but that also have strongly written characters. The cast of survivors were well-fleshed out and not only brought the horrors to life but explored the themes of grief, loss, friendship, and survival.
This book is an experience, and though this was my first piece by this author, it’s not going to be my last.

Nothing like a good story of female rage.
I read this book without reading the summary so I didn’t know what to expect. At first, I thought it would be a family drama about learning to live with a broken home. In a way, it was like that, but a much more psychologically complex version.
The story starts with a mother and her two daughters coping the best they can after the head of the household decides to leave. Ji-Won, the older of two sisters, is left to pick up the pieces and coddle her inconsolable mother. The downward spiral of her mental health starts slow and rapidly picks up. What begins as a series of dreams takes a turn for the worst when her mother meets a new man. A man who has anything but good intentions for the family.
When her dreams turn bloody, there’s no going back. Especially when she can no longer distinguish her dreams from her reality.
This was a fantastic body horror, especially with the eye eating. My only problem with this book was how suddenly the story came to an end. I’m hoping this means there’s a part two in the works because I’d love to see where Ji-Won takes the story next.

Jigglyspot and the Zero Intellect: An Addictive Horror Novel (Dominion of Shadows: The Demon's Gambit Book 2) by P. D. Alleva
Jigglyspot is on a quest. With the Feds hot on his trail, will he be successful or will he let down the voices in his head?
“None are innocent”
Those are the words of the star of this book, Jigglyspot, and it serves as a theme of the book. This book is a rollercoaster of deciding who to root for and who to root against, and I love that. I love being kept on my toes.
Though this is a thick book, the skillful way that PD Alleva has written the chapters leaves most of them on a cliffhanger that encourages you to keep reading. For horror/gore fans, there are some pretty intense scenes that will also keep you interested.
A wild, fun ride!

Beverly is back and things are perhaps more intense than they were in the first book. Twelve years have past and she’s gone on with her life. New town, new home, new family. It seems she’s escaped the crimes of her past. Or has she?
The thing that I love the most about Sean McDonough’s writing is the way he gets you emotionally invested in the characters. I wanted to root against Beverly, but it was so easy to understand her motivations that I couldn’t help but root for her.
If you loved Beverly Kills, definitely don’t miss out on this sequel. This is one bloody series that you won’t forget!

Historical fiction can be fun, and this is a good example why.
So many people, including myself, are fascinated with stories of the Titanic, both real stories and fictional ones. I’ve never considered the Titanic could be more of a horror story than it originally was, but this book explored a fun angle I never thought of—what if the Titanic were full of vampires?
Atmospheric and moody, I loved this story and the way it followed characters of different social classes to really give us an idea of what life was like for many different people on the Titanic.
I was captivated to the very end.

In 1993, a group of teenagers set out to make a horror movie, but only select scenes were ever released. Years pass, and the scenes garner interest from filmmakers who want to create a reboot. Problem is, most of the cast is already dead. The only survivor? The “monster” in the film.
I finished this book yesterday, but I took a little while to try to figure out my feelings for this book. Paul Tremblay certainly has a way with creating characters with interesting psyches. This book was no different. The main character, known as Thin Kid, throughout a majority of the book, was the most interesting of them all.
It’s hard for me to put my finger on how I feel about this one. It seems to explore the idea of the human monster, and the darkness that can lurk in the human psyche. The way that mob mentality can infect people to act in ways they wouldn’t normally act. Throughout the book, the characters gradually begin to act worse and worse until things reach a hellish climax.

This was a whirlwind of a read. After Thera’s Aunt has passed, she’s forced to return to her childhood home, and she brings along her husband, Hector. Her childhood home is the last place she wants to be, but a person can’t escape their fate.
A family curse, winged creatures, a spooky gothic mansion, a backyard graveyard, and an abandoned lighthouse, what more could a spooky book ask for?
Moody, dark, and atmospheric, lovers of gothic fiction will adore this one!

While this is a short collection of stories, each tale is dark and disturbingly beautiful in its own way. This author writes with raw emotion, and the JAPANESE BOX drips with it. The author explores the theme of the emptiness inside of us and the different ways that people cope with it in a haunting and lyrical way.
It was easy to get lost in this book, and I wish it was longer. I will definitely seek out more work from this author.

After defeating the Bad Man, Mella, her mother, and her brother are now able to reintegrate with society. Mella loves her Papa and her sister too. For a minute, things look perfect. Until she learns that there can be Bad Women too.
This book was a tearjerker, possibly even more so than the first one.
There are many different kinds of evil in the world, and the way that Angel Van Atta weaves these characters against Mella’s innocence creates a hauntingly beautiful narrative that’s nearly impossible to put down.

Miller has a strained relationship with her mother, to say the least. After her father passed away, her mother has taken to stalking her, desperate to spend time together. Reluctantly, Miller gives in, but she’s not prepared for what her mother’s got in store for her.
This was a gut-wrenching book. Fast paced and straight to the point, the only thing worse than narcissistic abuse, is narcissistic abuse from your mother. The author really hit the nail on the head with the arguments and dialogue. Each page filled me with so much dread, it was unreal. I binged this book in one sitting and had to stare at the wall for a few minutes to process that ending.
I can’t wait to find more pieces by this author.

Paulette Mahurin has done it again! She has a way with weaving beautifully tragic historical fiction that will leave you feeling all the emotions.
The Girl from Huizen was both suspenseful and insightful. The main character, Roz, was an interesting choice for a main character. She was timid and afraid, and in the situation she faced with the Nazis, that made it dangerous. But she was able to do what was right even when it was hard, and that made her admirable.
A real page-turner that’s guaranteed to leave you in your feelings!

Kosa by John Durgin
I went into this blind, and I think that made the book even more awesome. I always love a good story about a witch, but this one reminded me of a Grimm fairytale, and it went places I couldn’t guess. I found myself really rooting for Kosa throughout the story. She was like a twisted version of Rapunzel with her magic hair.
If you’re looking for a witch story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is one book worth reading!

Easy to read and follow along with, this was an excellent introduction into financial management.
It covers every topic you can think of from investments to 401ks to methods of saving money and how to budget.
A great place to start for those interested in the topic.

Intrigued by the cover and the title, I decided to do a blind read of this book. I had the idea that it would be about mushrooms, but I didn’t know how the author would twist that into horror. Add in a cult and an ancient God, and it has all my favorite horror elements!
I love the direction she went with it. Nothing spices up a spooky story better than family secrets. And this one had plenty. The characters were all very well-written, but I found the Spore Queen to be my favorite. The way she shifted roles in the story kept me reading until the last page because I didn’t know what would happen with her.
There were some really touching moments in this book too that explore love and lost and what family really means.

After the untimely death of his wife, Russell goes on a road trip to get away and process what’s happened. That’s how he finds himself at a casino. But this isn’t just any casino. There’s something strange about it, and whatever it is, it’s got its eye on Russell.
I’ve read so many books that I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting where stories will go. I couldn’t do that with Scatter. The author took this story in ways I couldn’t guess. I would best describe this story as a mix of Needful Things and the backrooms creepypasta. It was a psychological horror that explores the madness of a deteriorating mind.
A short story, but a powerful exploration into addiction, grief, and loss.

Leo and Josh met online by sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings. For this reason, their relationship has always been intense. After years of talking, they finally meet in person and hit it off. When they move in together, they seal their fate when they find themselves up against a mysterious threat. Everyone who goes in the water, leaves changed forever.
This found footage-type horror worked on so many levels. I love the way the author explored the feelings and fear of a close relationship going wrong while also having the spotlight on a very real, very physical horror.
I couldn’t guess what would come next. The ending was beautiful for this exact reason. I was left guessing until that final page.
Unsettling and unpredictable, We Met in the Forums is one wild ride.

Tyler, Robin, and Bird embark on a rescue mission into the cave system under Linkville to find Bird’s missing brother and sister-in-law. What they find is a nightmarish cave that they’ll be lucky to leave alive.
This book has so many creepy creatures that work at a multitude of different fears. Deep water, spiders, small spaces, and so much more. I think my favorite (least favorite because he freaked me out?) is the mole man. Teeth stuff is the worst!
All in all, if you’re looking for a short spooky read, this is one you won’t want to miss. I’m looking forward to going back and reading the other books in the series!

In this book, a horror fan vows to get revenge for his favorite authors who lost a brawl competition by whatever means necessary.
This was a fun book with plenty of familiar faces in the indie horror community. Members of the Books of Horror facebook group will love this clever little adventure.
Blood Brawl is easy to read in one setting. If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted horror novella with some laughs, you won’t be disappointed!

When Xia wakes up on the edge of a lake dirty and bloody, she has no memory of who she is or how she got there. Her only memory is her name, and even that much she isn’t certain of. When she stumbles across a woman in the woods nearby, she’ll have to face the difficult decision of determining if she, and her entire family, are friend or foe.
This book had me feeling all the emotions. The author was masterful in the way she described Xia’s struggles and feelings to us. I never saw the ending coming.
I loved everything about this book and found it very hard to put down. It’s an extreme horror piece with some awesome scenes of revenge later on in the story. IT gave me “I Spit on Your Grave” vibes.
Perfect story of female rage!

When Adrian comes home from a date, the last thing he expects to find is a baby on his doorstep. Except Abigail isn’t like other babies. She’s different. She has an allure, one that entrances everyone who comes into contact with her.
This was a quick read with lots of beautiful descriptions and a solid understanding of Adrian’s background. He’s been through his share of struggles, so he feels confident about all he’ll have to do to take care of Abigail.
This is a pretty straightforward tale until the ending. I really didn’t see that twist coming!
I wouldn’t really classify this book as horror, but it was still entertaining regardless.

Oh, gosh, where do I start with this one?
This is a five star out of five star read, of course. I’ve read Butterscotch before this book and that was also five stars, so I think that’s just Miss Asia’s thing. Now onto Ditto.
This one resonated with me pretty deeply. Having dealt with an abusive relationship for many years, I related to Annalise almost instantly. Her deep feelings of loneliness and isolation were easy to understand and Asia wrote about her feelings in a way that were clear and easy to understand for readers who haven’t been in a situation like that.
I loved the introduction of Ditto’s character and what she represented in this story. I sort of had an idea how it would end, but it was still beautifully done.
I’d say if you’re looking for a good story with female rage and revenge, you can’t miss with this one!

There’s something about dreams that are so mysterious, so creepy, and D.W. Hitz explores that to the fullest extent in Bloodtooth.
The story is told from multiple characters’ POVs from the past (1992) and the current time (2022). As terror descends on town in a multiple murder spree and kids start to go to sleep and not wake up, Wes has the unsettling feeling that this has all happened before. When he’s reunited with his addict sister, Di, he comes to realize that truth is stranger than fiction and that it’s up to them to put a stop to the madness.
I loved how absolutely intricate and detailed the plot was with the way the characters grow and come to understand their situation in both the past and the current time. I admit that I was a little confused at the beginning of the book because there are a lot of characters to learn, but once I did that, I loved where the story went. There were monsters and demons and claustrophobic situations. This was a fantastic mashup of so many awesome tropes.
I read another review that mentioned something about this giving vibes somewhere between Stephen King’s It and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and that is a very accurate description.
All in all, if you’re in the mood for an epic dark fantasy with some horror elements, this will definitely hit the spot.
