It took me awhile to get into this book because the first short story of the book is rather abstract and lulled me to sleep with all its fancy words. That being said, after that initial hump, every other story was super captivating with a wide range of themes. My first encounter with Ken Liu was his translation of the Three Body Problem and it is now to no surprise to me why he was chosen for the job because the man loves his sci-fi. Many of his short stories have a sci-fi setting and without any spoilers, you'll find some that are Black Mirror-esque while others are more into space/physics themes. They are not all sci-fi and my favourite short story has to be the Paper Menagerie. I personally loved all the ones with an Asian or immigrant theme and appreciated the research that Ken puts into his stories.
A captivating book written by Bill Browder about his own life in Russian high finance and the grave consequences he has experienced. I'm not very financially literate nor am I very politically aware, but this book had me from start to finish. In the beginning, I was attached to Bill Browder's recount of his financial career and how he went from nothing to a major player in high finance. By the end of the book, I was engrossed by the Magnitsky story and the reality of corruption in Russia. I would definitely recommend this book to others even if you don't have a real interest in finance. This book is much more than simply a rich guy describing how he made his fortune.
Whether you're a sneaker head or not, this book is a great read. I loved getting to peek into life as an entrepreneur in the 20th century. Phil has a very interesting story to tell featuring many interesting characters on the original Nike team. I would definitely recommend this book.
I had high expectations for this book due to the ratings and reviews. This book definitely had me hooked by Paul's recount of his career in medicine and his narrative in his final years battling cancer. However, I can't help but feel that I'm not yet at the age nor stage in my life where I can truly appreciate this book. As someone who has yet to start a family, it was difficult for me to fully understand the relationships and feelings. Additionally, the language and references were sometimes hard for me to grasp and as someone who reads rather fast, I probably missed a lot of detail. That being said, I will definitely reread this book sometime in the future.
I rarely read self-help / life hack kind of books, so this was a good read to me. Was it "life-changing" and did it completely change my perception? No. However, it did broaden my perspective and clarify some ideas to me. Most of the lessons/ideas in this book are not unique, but for someone that does not read these kind of books often, it was nice to have them condensed and summarized because there are many things that we "know" or should know, but we forget and don't think of immediately when we are making decisions. I would suggest reading this book about one chapter a day since each chapter focuses on a different topic. I liked the fact that the other included anecdotes and stories from various sources which made this book a lot more interesting. There's no shocker in this book, but again, reinforcing ideas and solidifying the pillars of productivity is what this book does well. For me, it helped me get my mind right, so I would definitely recommend to others.
