Pleasantly surprised by this older "gay western". It was not porn disguised as a western but a true western. The main character was very likable even with all his faults. Highly recommended read.
Wow! Slavers in the Rocky Mountains in the early 1800's - had no idea. What an adventure; from greenhorns to Winona getting captured by Slavers, Nate losing his sight for much of the story and a nail biter to the very last page. Yet another fantastic installment of Wilderness by David Thompson.
Ahhh much better, Wilderness 20 involved the entire King family. Risking life and limb to help out a friend of the family and being a little to trusting of another mountain man. A great adventure from start to finish...as usual :)
Third book in a row where Nate is out trapping beaver - wonder what his family is doing all this time? Good action packed story but it was so obvious during most of the book why "The Invincible One" was "invincible".
Not my favorite Wilderness book but not my least favorite. I thought Nate becoming obsessed with slaying a panther or mountain lion was a little out of character, as only he was in danger no family members or friends. And he could have easily left the domain of the Mountain Cat and been done with it. He seemed to stay in the valley for one reason; to seek revenge on the panther. Not a great quality for our wilderness hero. The glimpses into Nates formative years were interesting as David Thompson has not given us readers much information on Nates childhood until now.
David Eddings is my favorite fantasy author and his Belgariad series is at the top of my list.
Gay romance in the American frontier? Yes! Very good story written by Toby Johnson. The self discovery, and realization of the attraction between the two main characters is perfectly timed; not rushed with just the right about a building tension.
Nathaniel has two very important decisions to make. Should he return to the states and be a slave to society, or stay in the Rocky Mountains and live free? If that isn't enough, he also must fight off a Blackfoot war party and decide whether or not to grant a dieing Shoshone warrior's request for him to marry his daughter. This book mixes romance, and an epic struggle for survival all into one great adventure.
A mash-up between David Thompson's Wilderness series and David Robbins (yes, the same author) Blade series.Brave frontiersmen like Nate King ventured into the untouched Rockies to escape the bonds of civilization. But Nate could never have dreamed that his independence would one day be threatened by a madman from a distant age--or that his only hope to stop the maniac was to trust three warriors named Blade, Hickok, and Geronimo.
Meriwether: A Novel of Meriwether Lewis and the Lewis & Clark Expedition (The American Story) by David Nevin
[author: David Nevin] has brought Meriwether Lewis to life in this novelization of the Lewis & Clark Expedition across the American Frontier.I would recommend this and Nevin's other historical novels to anyone interested in early American history but can't get through those musty old high school history books :-)
Amazing story considering the youth of the author - hope the movie doesn't ruin this kids career!
A gay western love story. Plenty of story to go with the action.
Had a rough start but about a quarter way through the book I realized I was anticipating getting back to reading to find out what happens next with the characters.

A wild fast-paced adventure that had me staying up late to finish and kept me guessing to what was really going on.
Had high hopes for this book, what with the position the author held in the White House, and all the high profile reviewers, but I was disappointed. The writing was fantastic, kept me turning the pages but most of the book was build up.I was VERY disappointed in the reason for "America's Last Days" (won't give it away here) but there are so many REAL WORLD reasons (ala the shredding of the Constitution and power grab of the current administration) that could have been the basis of the book, but the author took a different route and kinda shallow reason in my opinion.
The second book in the Legend of the Golden Feather starts off right where book one left off with its huge cliff-hanger.I don't recall reading a book that had me laughing out loud so much. By no fault of their own, Jake and Wiley get themselves, along with their "protectors" mixed up with several shady characters who either want them both dead, want to steal their gold or just want them ;)Another great read by Dave Brown. This book was even harder to put down than the first in the series.
The Cactus Eaters: How I Lost My Mind-and Almost Found Myself-on the Pacific Crest Trail (P.S.) by Dan White
Dan White had me hooked immediately with this well written mis-adventure along the Pacific Crest Trail but after reading it, not sure who the authors intended audience is. The majority of the book is a trail journal, funny, painful and embarrassing moments, most of which was caused by his own inexperience of trail life but the underlying story is of his own personal journey, into his own occasionally deranged mind.If you are looking for insight into hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this book is not for you, if on the other hand you want a glimpse into Dan White's mind you will enjoy this book.
The first book in the Wilderness Series I really did not like. The attitude that the main character Nate King took with the "greenhorns" seemed completely out of character. Early on in the story, I figured out why Libbie, the daughter of a "greenhorn" family heading to the "Promised Land", wanted to get away from her bible thumping "evil" father. Why Nate could not figure it out is beyond me.This is one story in the Wilderness Series I wish I had skipped, kinda tainted my character image of Nate King.
Nate King is back to his old self in Apache Blood. A great ride through the entire story that involved King's entire family with his friend Shakespeare heading for Santa Fe and into Apache territory for a "vacation" (never quite understood why they all thought Santa Fe would be a great getaway destination"The action was fantastic but what really came through, was the love and devotion of the King family all the way to the final page, a somewhat sad ending :(
I was very pleasantly surprised by the fantastic writing of "Cap Iversen" in Arson!.This may be a "gay western" but it is a real western story, not erotica in western clothes. I look forward to finding the remaining 2 novels in the Dakota Series.
If anyone can find any information about who Cap Iversen is that would be great. He or she is a great writer. Doing a Google search on Cap Iversen only brings up these 3 novels in the Dakota series so it must be a pen name.

Character Nate King at his best; always willing to risk his life & limb for the safety and well-being of others.Another fantastic Frontier Fiction tale from David Thompson. So good, I am going to jump right to the next book in the series; http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/990606.Prairie_Blood to read about the King family's adventure back to their cabin in the Rockies :)
Bill Bryson is, IMO, a very gifted writer. I generally am not interested in world history, but with Bryson's wit and style I swiftly read half of this book in a weekend.I recommend this book to any one who enjoys Bryon's other books.
Fantastic 1st book in the series. Looking forward to the other two!
I stopped reading Piers Anthony's Xanth books back in high school and after reading Air Apparent I recall why I stopped reading them; way to many silly, stupid puns that add nothing to the story. This book would be a third of the page count without all the puns.I gave it two stars because the story was good enough to keep me reading and I was interested in the resolution of the mystery, but I have to say, this will be the last Xanth book I purchase.
Cindy Ross is a very good author. In Journey on the Crest she was able to put me right on the trail with her. Experience the heat, dust, beautiful vistas and every heavy breath as we climbed steep switchbacked trails.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Pacific Crest Trail or any long-distance hike.
The first book in the Legend of the Golden Feather series is a wonderful light-hearted western set in the late 1880's Rockies. With plenty of adventure, mystery, new friendships and loves, it kept me up late not wanting to put the book down. With the cliff-hanger ending I was very glad I purchased the set from the authors website. If you don't mind a little indian lore or fantasy mixed in with your western, the guy getting the guy (instead of the girl) and just a touch of environmental preaching sprinkled in, then give Bristlecone Peak a read, you won't regret it.
Took me a while to get through this book, no fault of the author as the story was very well written, more so my in-ability to care much about the main character, Francois Rivet, even to the end, he could not be counted on by his "Patron", William Clark. That said, I did get a little choked up at the farwells and surprised (although I should not have been) by Rivets final decision.
Another great adventure for Nate and his family. With his friend, Shakespeare, in need of a doctor and word that his old flame, Adaline, is searching for him, Nate, Shakespeare, Winona, Blue Water Woman and Zach head for St. Louis. To say they did not make it unscathed, would be an understatement. An inheritance, plots of murder and deception, a slaver and revenge keep this story moving fast.
A fantastic action packed sci-fi adventure. All action, from page 1 to the last page, very little character development, the events are the story, not the characters drawn into the event. If you like sci-fi, and you like action, this is the book for you.
