The story started slow for me, perhaps because of the painful foreshadowing. The author does this a few times, much like Stephen King, where he alludes to the painful outcome to come in the next few chapters. I flippin hate that.
However, after that initial slowness, I couldn't put this down. It's a combination of a mystery and sci-fi, and gives a nice glimpse into a possible post-apocalyptic world. The story progresses linearly with a single plot for awhile, and eventually slows the pace by switching between several character stories. Good thing too, or I might not have slept.
Enjoyable first book, currently available via Amazon Unlimited. I'll certainly give the other books in the series a read.
