This book annoyed me. Not because it wasn’t good, but because it could have been better. The premise, although not unique, had promise of being a good thriller. A younger detective catches a case of a dead woman that she knows from her hometown and then another body is found and she links it to a serial killer that is snatching desperate people for their organs by using a fake job listing. This plot reminded me of an episode of Criminal Minds, FBI, or NCIS, which I am certain had an episode where people who answered an ad were then killed by a serial killer. There is room in this plot to do some unique or unexpected things. But instead, we get characters who are woefully underdeveloped which means we do not care one iota about them. We also get ridiculously bad police procedures, which I am hoping was on purpose and not the author failing to do minimal research.
I usually love a book with short chapters and fast pacing that does not have a ton of detail. But that only works if the storyline is strong or the characters are developed. Here I was left wanting more from both. The storyline almost seemed like stream of consciousness without any editing to bring the reader along for the ride. The main character has a boyfriend who was so poorly developed I had to go back and see if I missed entire chapters that gave the backstory of their relationship. Unfortunately, I did not accidently skip any parts. I wish the book had thoughtfully introduced and gave the reader more to show more care about with regards to its main characters. Instead we are left with a superficial facimile of a character that leaves the reader wanting more.
TLDR; This book was a miss for me. Although the pacing was good and it was a quick read, the characters were flat, the main characters did not shine through, and the plot had a lot of glaring holes in both procedure and believability. show less
