A Window Into Old Jerusalem: Observations about Jerusalem and the Holy Land 1820-1920 by Shelomo Alfassa
Have you ever wanted to know what life was like for the Jewish people in Jerusalem and the Holy Land long before Israel became a State? Well known international Sephardic advocate, Shelomo Alfassá, provides such information in his new compilation, A Window Into Old Jerusalem, a unique collection of short tales and first hand observations about Jewish life in Ottoman Jerusalem and the Holy Land, by travelers that visited during a critical period of transition. A Window Into Old Jerusalem will provide the reader with a 'look' back, to see what life was like for those living in and around the city that sits at the center of the world.
"And Everything Began At Urla (Turkey); The Chronicle of The Varon Family" ("Y Todo Commenzo En Urla; Cronica de la Familia Varon") authored by Frid Mayo, Nissim.
The book includes documents, genealogical tree beginning from 1859. This is a rare hard-covered book of some 410 pages on the Varon family from Turkey, written by the author in Peru.
It is a well put together comprehensive genealogy book complete with maps, trees and photos. There were only a few copies printed, and this is the "last surviving" copy which was given to a prominent Sephardic leader in New York who later died and I received the book as part of a collection.

Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: How a Generation of Swashbuckling Jews Carved Out an Empire in the New World in Their Quest for Treasure, Religious Freedom--and Revenge by Edward Kritzler
At first, Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean looks like an incredible book. Edward Kritzler tells the story of how certain Jews which fled Spain during the era of the Inquisition, went on to become involved in sea trading, exploration and in certain cases, piracy. And while it is indeed a pleasant book, filled with history, exploration, intrigue and adventure - that said, what it is not, is a scholarly work. The book is like a rainbow-sprinkled doughnut; it is highly attractive and at first tastes great, but only after you start eating it do realize it is filled with empty calories. This work is recommended to those who fancy historic tales, especially maritime and explorative narratives, but are not looking for solid history or precise scholarship.
