Fascinating. Brilliant. This book will change the way you think - about yourself, about history, about religion, about the paranormal, about the world. Highly recommended.
Absolutely fantastic book. Scott Lynch writes beautifully, with a wonderful mixture of humour, adventure, grittiness and tragedy. The plot has enough twists to make a person dizzy, and is fabulously well constructed. The characters are complex and deeply believable; Locke Lamora is almost as clever a con artist as Scott Lynch is a writer. This is a brilliant, riveting, unputdownable debut from an amazingly skilled young author.
An absolutely wonderful book. It has a totally original premise supported by fascinating and very well developed characters. All in all, it is an amazing love story that shies away from sappy romance.
It's highly intriguing and brilliantly written, managing to be hilarious at times and heartrendingly sad at others. A truly fabulous book, destined to be a classic. One of my top five reads of all time.

A unique and invaluable reference. Fantastic for all those little mix-ups in language that you can't quite remember at a time when you most need to get them right.
I am in awe of this book. It is, without a doubt, the most powerful book I have ever read. I defy anyone to read it and not be changed by it. Amazing. Hard-hitting. Sensible. Rational. Painful. Hopeful. Infuriating. Spell-binding.
Bascially, it's a book about the plight of animals under the domination of humans. The book begins with the verse from Genesis where God commands Adam to have 'dominion' over the creatures of the earth. Scully explains, throughout the book, just how appallingly we have abused that supposed command, often in the name of it being our God-given right to do so. That said, this is not a religious book, nor does the religious aspect of the title dominate the book's theme. I would wholly disagree that this book is aimed primarily at Christians. It's aimed at everyone.
The book is so well put together, each chapter laid out in great detail and dealing with one issue separately from the rest. Scully's viewpoints and counter-arguments to the vile people who take delight in the abuse of our power over animals, or those who deny that animals, in fact, have any feeling (whether physical or emotional) whatsoever, are completely sensible, utterly rational, and far more realistic than that of those who oppose his views. He does not use sentimental language or radical terms. He is just absolutely genuine and makes perfect sense. I was repeatedly blown away, both by the awfulness of some of the things he describes and by the awesomeness of his ability to explain show more just why such things were awful in the first place.
The world is a better place for this book. Matthew Scully deserves all the praise he can get for Dominion. Everybody should read this book. Go forth and find it. It will change your view of the world. show less

This is a charming, easy read, but it doesn't match up to Gaarder's previous standard. It's much more light-hearted than some of his other books, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally love Gaarder's writing best when he's tying your brain in knots with mind-boggling concepts.
This book doesn't have that aspect to the same degree, but it's still a sweet book which makes perfect Christmas reading.

It's been a while since I read this, but at the time it was a great read. I've always liked Holdstock's raw, down-to-earth style, and in this he manages to create a wonderful balance of ancient myth and modern storytelling. The combination of Merlin and Jason is certainly a unique twist, and he pulls it off in a very believable way.
Not as huge and awe-inspiring as Holdstock's previous work, but if you're after original, well-written fantasy with a historical edge, look no further.

Nope. Sorry, but this just didn't grab me. I'm told the next two are far better, and I really ought to try them, but as a stand-alone book, I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about. Yes, the premise was quite original, but I often had to force myself to read on in the hopes that it would improve. But it didn't.
This probably works quite well as a childrens/young adults' book, but it didn't make good adult reading. I often enjoy books aimed at younger people, but sadly not on this occasion. It felt like Nix was trying to bridge the gap between adults' and childrens' literature, but without success. I found the characters largely flat and uninteresting, and the language very uninspiring.
Shame, because I had high hopes. It was a fairly light-hearted, easy read, but it didn't wow me in the slightest.

This was one of my absolute favourite books as a child, and is still amongst my top ten of all time. I have read it countless times, and it never loses its suspense or magic.
Fabulous stuff. It'll change your attitudes to food forever.
This book changed my life. I have now been making juice every day for over a year, and I will never go back.
Utterly fantastic stuff. And Jason Vale is so enthusiastically informative and easy to read. You can't help but be enthused along with him.

Wow. Sci-fi novels aren't usually my favourite genre, and the last couple I've read have been slow and more than a little tedious. But this book has reinstalled my faith in science fiction literature. Packed with amazing, often mind-boggling concepts, this is a book that is not only highly entertaining and full of page-turning, edge-of-the-seat action, it is also a novel that makes the reader just stop and think. I don't think I'll ever look at the universe in quite the same way after this one.
I loved this book. Deeply atmospheric, raw fantasy with a creepy mingling with reality that completely dragged me in. Unlike anything else I've ever read... one of those books that'll forever stay with me. Highly recommended to anyone who's after something unusual amongst their fantasy reading. You can almost taste the forest.
Useful for learning the absolute basics, but there's also some pretty bad advice in here amongst the useful stuff. Aimed at newbies to the hobby, it has the potential to get new fishkeepers into trouble by suggesting such things as only monthly water changes and the 'inch per gallon' rule, both of which are now considered outdated and uneducated practices amongst knowledgable fishkeepers.
