Medical therapy and health maintainence for Transgender men: a guide for healthcare providers by MD R. Nick Gorton
This is an excellent and very thorough look at all aspects of health care for transmen. It goes through ALL aspects of physical transition, the various ways T is delivered and all possible effects T has on the body. It also covers all the various types of surgical options. The last two chapters cover life situations such as ER visits and medical documentation. The book is written for doctors and therapists but I highly recommend it for all guys to read, as it contains vital information for anyone planning transition or already in transition.
Deep South Staples: Or How to Survive in a Southern Kitchen Without a Can of Cream of Mushroom Soup (a cookbook of by Robert St. John
Great cookbook, worth having just for the stories he tells alone. The recipes are nicely updated - no more cooking canned cream of whatever soups.
Fascinating look at a different side of Hitler, his relationship with his niece Geli, who committed suicide in his apartment. The background on his family and how he distanced himself from his background shows a lot about his character and the indifference he showed towards most people throughout his life.
I enjoyed this book for its portrayal of acrobats' lives in the circus. But I did not like the somewhat pedophilia storyline of the relationship between the two main characters. I was turned off by that.
I love the recipes in this book. They are so easy to make and they taste good. Highly recommended for the not-so-talented cook.
I'm not sure why I enjoy this book as much as I do. I first read it in middle school and fell in love with the economics of the book. I also like the independence of the main character, a strong-willed woman. I actually took an economics class in college because of this book. And I still don't know why I like it!
This is an older book, from the 1980's, but I enjoy reading other guys' personal stories so it was interesting from that standpoint. I wish someone would do a thorough study of FtMs like this again. I think it would be absolutely fascinating and makes me wish I was a social scientist so I could do it! It is a long and occasionally dry read, but I thought it was worth it in the end.
True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism--For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals by Mildred L. Brown
I really did like this book, even though it focused mainly on the MtF experience. While there are significant differences between the MtF & FtM experience, at a basic level we are the same: how we come to realize we are trans, accept it, come out to friends and family, anxieties about hormones & surgeries, employment and education. It is 10 years old but still fairly relevant. I gave it to my Mom to read after I came out to her.
This book is somewhat dry, with discussions of sociological theories and a chapter on the feminist and lesbian movements and their relationship to FtMs. I'm not big into theory so can't review the book in depth. There were some interesting parts, especially the first-person accounts and the section on the different ways guys identify sexually. FtMs with lesbian careers and without lesbian careers, subdivided into straight- and gay-identified men.
This is the book I would take to that deserted island. The blurb on the back is right - you do feel like an intruder in Laurie's mind & conversations. My favorite book.
Wow. The language, the battle descriptions, Jacob's agonies - I empathize with hiim so completely, which is a little unnerving...but such an excellent book. I read different passages in it frequently (it is by my bedside), but when I read the entire book I find myself using some of those great 17th century words.
I read this book 3 times the first day I purchased it, I love it that much. It is a simply written book, but powerful, to me. I also love the section where the boys are in the ruined house. Grimsley's description of their feelings & reactions are just like mine when I used to go into an abandoned sharecropper's house on my family property. It was like me on the page.
This is the first book I read after finally coming out to myself and acknowledging that I am FtM. I really enjoyed the pieces in this book. Very helpful at a difficult time for me. I particularly liked 'Often' by Mac McCord and 'My Gender Tale' by Cj Gross. Good stuff.
