I am not a fan of autobiography, but the author captured me with her humor, the history of her people and her life and her resilience in overcoming her circumstances; although I got bored with the book with 20 pages left to read, so I can't say I know how it ended.
Great read, the story lines of these 4 characters and the method of how the author told each story was impressive. I am not sure I like how it ended.
I looked forward to reading this book as I myself was a West Indian immigrant 20 years ago. I was pleased with how the author was able to bring descriptive elements similiar to the life of the West Indian in the islands, those who came to NYC during those times and her life trying to make a living. I am just a bit disappointed in the ending of the book (I hope there is a sequel), as I wanted to know that the main character was able to "get her papers". I would suggest this book be on the reading list for any Cultural Anthropology course.
