The title is slightly misleading ('sins' like drinking gambling aren't mentioned). This is actually mostly just a history of prostitution in London with occasional mentions of sex scandals and pornography. The writing is fine, to the point, and the 300 or so pages are quickly and enjoyably read. And there's plenty of interesting facts and stories.
Abandoned. Whilst charming and fun, it felt like just a grouping of amusing ideas and thoughts that the author has had over the years that then got compiled into a book with a loose story.
Roberts' writing doesn't have much visuals, but it's chocked full of facts and details and thoroughly fascinating throughout. There's a weak chapter on the Iberian campaign, and the beginning and end of the book isn't quite as strong as the sensational middle, but overall this is a fantastic read. I'm looking forward to Roberts' "Churchill" now.
An Anatomy of Addiction: Sigmund Freud, William Halsted, and the Miracle Drug Cocaine by Howard Markel
Short, but very enjoyable. First half particularly good.
A quick and enthralling read, bustling with immense details and footnotes. It makes some generalisations here and there, but overall this is fantastic.
I heard this first Discworld effort wasn't Pratchett's best, and I have to agree with that. It's certainly decent, but I look forward to moving onto some of the supposedly better later novels.
My first Pratchett, and I adored it. The second half of the book wasn't quite as good as the hilarious first half, but it was still fantastic. Looking forward to working my way through more Discworld novels.
I actually really enjoyed this. It was tender and touching and a nice little pre-Christmas day read. I’m sure I'll re-read it again next year to remind me what Christmas spirit is all about.
This was okay. Quite a lot of characters to keep track of, and think it might benefit from a second reading.
Certainly not my favourite John le Carre. I found the training section in the middle of the book particularly tiresome.
A bit mixed about this book. At times I was utterly enthralled by it and bombed through chapter after chapter. But I also found it a tad boring at times, and I'm really not a fan of the rather stark writing style (though this could be due to a poor translation). I'm also not sure how my having seen the Hollywood film effected my perception of it. But overall I liked it.
