This is amazing first by an author who really understands what it is like to grow up in a religious cult. The story is told from the point of views of two teen girls - Honey and Agnes, who have been "kidnapped" along with Agnes' little brother by her grandmother. By the end of the book, you really care about these girls, even though they are very different, and you cheer them on as they do what they think is right.
This is a really fun story - a fairy tale for grown ups. Connolly touches on dozens of themes, such as growth, fear, loyalty, and pride. I felt it hard to stay focused at points, but overall, I was pleasantly surprised and definitely want to read more by this author.
Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes: Part One: Millennium Approaches Part Two: Perestroika by Tony Kushner
I was skeptical, but had to read this book (play, really) for a class a few years ago. I've read it three times since then. It is a moving story about love, commitment, and despair.
