I actually like this book. Collins did a wonderful job keeping the reader engaged while keeping the pace of the intense plot. I like how she made it easy to feel connected to the main characters. Although I feel it helped ease my anticipation, there were a few parts that drug on just a bit. Overall, I did really like this story. I will enjoy finding out what happens in book two.
I loved this book! It is very ispirational. I experienced the death of my father when I was very young. I had tears and smiles throughout the book. I even was lead to watch the hour long youtube video just to see his personality and his wonderful wife live.
I finished this book in about a days time. I am not a fan of sci-fi books, but this book was overall okay. To be honest, I do not like reading books about kids dieing, especially babies. A strength of the book is that it does a good job of making connections from the begining to the end. In my opinion, a weakness was the fact that throughout the book, the character Roland was protrayed as a bad boy that I felt the author wanted the reader to not like so much that when he was "unwound", the reader was not supposed to feel as bad for the boy. I did not like that part one bit.
I enjoyed this book. It had a bit of humor and serious times that gave a very nice balance. I feel the book did a great job of opening my eyes to what really happens on Indian Reservations. The strengths of the book are the plot and characters that the author portrayed in his story. I found myself wanting to find out what was going to happen to Arnonld as he made his life changing decisions. I also love that the point of view is from one character. This made it very easy to follow the story line. The weaknesses of the book in my opinion would be the language and the hint of sexual references.
Peak by Roland Smith
I loved this book. I could not put it down for two days. I feel that I could have read it in a day if I had a full-time nanny. The strength's of this book are in the characters that unfold in the story. Peak is a dynamic character in the story. He undergos his own personal confict resolution with his real dad as he attempts the climb of his physical and personal life on Mt. Everest. The weaknesses of the book for me was the language...vocab. I found myself not understanding some of the mountain climbing lingo throughout the book. The author did explain the climbing vocab when he first introduced it, but it would have been nice to have it revisited a couple more times as it was used.
I thought this book was a very good older young adult book. Its strengths were in the writing. The author did a great job when speaking from point of view. The characters were well written with great transistion between them. I had no problem following along the sequence of events with having three main characters. The only weakness that I saw was that of the style of writing where language was concerned. I feel that the language about sex in the story was a bit much for me to recommend to a younger high school age student.
