Ellis tackles a personality that is seldom examined. Sociopaths are often subjects of literature and upper class educated men are often subjects of literature - but never a disturbing repulsive combination of the two such as Bateman. Bateman is so disturbing that it is hard to believe he has a name and blends into the world of regular people. Perhaps Ellis wants us to ask ourselves why such a deranged person could blend into regular society and why does he not stand out? This is a masterpiece of characterization. The disjointed writing style parallels patterns of Bateman's thoughts and actions. It is not only the content of the writing which introduces us to Bateman, but the style of the writing. Enjoyed the examination of the book while being terrified and repulsed by its content.
