Wow - this is overrated. An interesting world, and some compelling prose, but at the end of the day its themes are not groundbreaking.
(Similar to my feelings on The Silmarillion.) The first three "chapters" are amazing. Throughout the book, Milton shows his impressive knowledge of Scripture through his allusions. And he maintains a high level of prose. But many of the "chapters" drag. And most troublingly, he has incorrect theology, some of which even swerves into heresy.
A few parts of this are astonishingly good. But a lot of it is quite dull... It would be fascinating to know how much Tolkien considered finished, and how much his son added.
Very helpful overview of the four most common eschatological views among Protestant Christians. A bit dated in parts, but still beneficial
