This book flowed very well and even though it was written as a poem, it was still very informational. Marian Anderson kept singing despite resistance due to her race and left listeners speechless with her voice.
Rachel Carson defied the odds as a woman of her time. She became a biologist and despite rejection was finally able to land a professional job. At a time when most women were getting married and having children, Rachel worked endlessly for what she believed in. This is a great book about an inspiring woman. Little girls need more stories like this so they know they can do anything they put their minds to.
Alta loves running and was inspired by Wilma Rudolph. However, when Charmaine struts up with new shoes and gives her some competition, she is not too happy. Int he end the girls all work together and head to a parade to see their idol from their same town. A fun, fictional book that gives a little history on Wilma Rudolph.
The story flows through a year of paintings and snippets of writings from Grandma Moses. The poetry along with it is helpful to tell the story for children.
Beatrix Potter loved animals and loved drawing them. When she borrowed her neighbors guinea pig, it died throughout the night. This book gives the reader a different look at her love of animals.
When Gus moves to town, Pete befriends him. Throughout the book Gus tries to do things that all the other animals are doing but has trouble. At the end, he finally finds something he is good at.
Danny gets his wish when a dinosaur leaves the museum for the day to play. A good book for a child to learn to read, discuss dinosaurs, and learn about friendship.
Monsieur Gator has gotten older and none of the other critters give him any respect. He devises a plan and makes a delicious gumbo to lure the little critters his way.
Fly Guy and his friend friend create a story together. I read this with a six-year-old today.
Grizzwold gets pushed from his home and goes in search of a new one. A book meant to be an easy read for young children.
Mr. Creacher substitutes for a class of children who have been misbehaving. Once a mischievous child himself, he teaches the children a lesson as he is paying for his lesson from long ago. A good book for children in the classroom to learn to be respectful.
This book is a collection of poems that any child could relate to. Reading this to a kindergartener who is soon moving, the poem about a friend moving really struck him as he said, "I will be telling some of my friend my last good-bye soon."
Cousteau followed his dreams of wanting to breathe underwater. He made it possible to swim like the fish and learned so much about the ocean at the same time. The problems he found with pollution are sadly still happening.
Everyone knows about Ella Fitzgerald (or they should). However, there are many things they do not know. Ella had a tougher life than most, living on the streets as a teen. This book gave great background information that I did not know before.
Clementine Hunter began her art after years of working on a plantation and wound up becoming a well-known artist. I enjoyed both the book and the illustrations. However, her story itself is inspiring. After reading this, I realized a family I have nannied for have one of her paintings hung in their house. They also named their daughter Clementine. I'm happy to be able to tie this together finally!
Sun Ra always knew he was different from others (he even claimed to be from Saturn). Although he was eccentric he found a home in his music. The story itself was well told, informative, and fun. The illustrations are beautiful and full of life. As soon as I finished I ordered a Sun Ra album on vinyl and cannot wait to get it in.
A story of two friends who spoke to each other through their music. Creating a new sound that turned heads. Bird and Diz created bebop and achieved a status not many African Americans had at that time. The illustrations and the layout of the book is absolutely amazing.
Told in rhyme, The Brothers Gruesome depicts three wicked, ugly brothers. As they worry only of themselves and destroy all in their path, they neglect to notice something even larger lurking on their heels. If a person continually does bad things, even more bad things may come back to bite them.
Sam always told stories that were untrue. These tales of moonshine brought a great deal of trouble to her cat Bangs and her friend Thomas. In the end she learned that "moonshine" or lying was wrong and finally began telling the truth.
Scientist has a problem when his two best friends just cannot get along. He develops a hypothesis and gets to work. This would be a great book to discuss the scientific method with children.
When different animals have different beliefs of what the moon really as, they came together and asked a scientist. Unsatisfied with the answer, they all went on believing the moon was how they perceived. This book could be used to discuss the moon and astronomy. It could also be used to talk about different species.
Hedgie finally gets to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut. This fun book would be good to read before discussing astronauts and what they do.
Rex devises a plan to become the king of space and builds robots to help him along the way. It may be fun to have children make designs of their own robots and possibly learn about robots there are now.
When a meatball shower strikes, Captain Nutt must make an emergency landing on a planet unlike his own. This would be for much younger children if tying it in with science. Of course, you could use the meatball shower and learn about meteors or even different planets.
When a science experiment with fungus goes wrong, the class has to help find a way to fix it. This would be a fun book to read to children before discussing fungus.
Ella Kate was taller than anybody had ever seen in her small town. Although sometimes she was made fun of, her childhood was good until she was to speak in front of a crowd. From there years went by and she stuck close to home until one day a man from Chicago asked her to come to his museum. Her life became that of wonder and amazement. Her adventures and wealth were byproducts of her height, something she was once ashamed of. This would be a good book to talk to kids about self-acceptance.
Gracie loved her Aunt Roo and learned so much from her. As she got a little older, she went through what many kids that age might and felt a little embarrassed by her aunt who appears to have down syndrome. Luckily, she came to her senses and realized how important her Aunt Roo was to her and was not ashamed anymore. At first I liked the book, although I did not like how Roo was unable to spell "November" as an adult. I also started to become unsure when Gracie refused to introduce her friend to Roo. Fortunately, the ending was good and brought me back. A good book to show how amazing and influential a person mental disabilities can be.
Everything I Need To Know I Learned From a Little Golden Book (Little Golden Books (Random House)) by Diane Muldrow
I like this book because it has so many great life lessons along with pictures taken from the Little Golden Book series of childhood. This book teaches lessons from the old books and probably some new ones. It brings a sense of nostalgia to the older reader while bringing fun and learning to the new reader. This also is a coffee table book for me; however, my mom bought this for me as a Christmas present a few years ago.
"I Like You" is a high-spirited book for friends. It is literally for anyone who truly understands their best friend. I bought this book a few years ago. It is one of my coffee table books and whenever someone visits who genuinely understands me and vice versa, I have them read it.
If I were to read this as a child, well, I wouldn't. The anxiety this little girl feels in the story is evident and brings the anxiety to life (something I would not have had patience for as a child). It has so many great math problems to work with children. This would be ideal to work on problem solving. I give it four stars for this reason and also because the illustrations are fun. In personal preference, the book is not for me. It is very wordy. I have never liked word problems in math. With ADHD, deciphering it all can be time consuming and frustrating. This little girl's anxiety with math would have been my anxiety with word problems.
