This election year thriller was written two years before the first woman ran on major ticket in a Presidential election. On a dark night in May 1945, a pregnant woman is spirited out of Nazi Germany. Then, 36 years later, proof has been found by a White House aide that the central architect of the resurgence of neo-Nazism in the United States is Hitler's Daughter. She could be any one of three powerful women close to the White House.
There is a killer on the prowl, terrorizing the streets of Portland, brutally beating men to death. Each victim was recently on trial for domestic abuse, but each was released. The press is having a field day with the new vigilante killer, but it's up to Detective Sergeant Ray Barkley and his partner, Detective Nina Preston, to stop the killer.

Among the suspects is Criminal Court Judge Carole Cranston, who presided over the trials of each victim. But neither is Nina. She's determined to prove Carole is the killer for hidden reasons of her own.
Dr. Sam Russell wakes up to find himself in his car in a ditch with no memory of how he's gotten there. There's a woman's shoe in his trunk. Dried blood under his fingernails. And when he gets home, he finds his wife, Maureen, is missing, having taken only her purse. For Sam, it's all too frighteningly familiar--seven years ago, his first wife vanished the same way, and a week later, she was found strangled and stabbed. It was Sam who was arrested and tried for the crime. And it was because of a hung jury that he went free. Now, it's happening again.

As a cop, Hannah Montgomery knows the husband is always the best suspect, especially in this case. But as a woman, she's got her doubts. For one thing, there's a mysterious phone call and ransom demand, nothing like the first time around. It's Hannah's job to get close to Sam, feel him out, see if he'll trust her enough to slip up, make a mistake. But the more she gets to know the good doctor, the more she's convinced he's what he claims to be--a devoted family man who is genuinely shaken up by his second wife's disappearance. Maureen Russell certainly left few clues. She was a woman with no past, no family, no friends, and Sam seems to know very little about the woman he married. Or else he has something to hide.

Then the case takes a stunning turn. A body is found, brutally murdered. And an eyewitness claims to have seen Sam with blood on his shirt. Now, as Sam grows more desperate to prove his innocence, shocking secrets show more will come to light, exposing a tangled web of deceit and betrayal stretching back over years. And in one moment, Hannah will know the truth: is she protecting a wronged man or has she fallen for the charms of a cold-blooded killer? show less

Dr. Tony Hill and Detective Chief Inspector Carol Jordan return in the award-winning series that is the basis for the hit show on BBC America.

In a small grim room, the body of a woman is discovered, panic and pain etched in her face. The scene matches in every detail a series of murders two years ago-murders that ended when irrefutable forensic evidence secured the conviction of a deeply disturbed young man named Derek Tyler.

But there's no way Tyler could have killed the latest victim. He's been locked up in a mental institution since his trial, barely speaking a word. So is there a copycat?

All his years of experience tell top criminal psychologist Dr. Tony Hill that there isn't-but that would make the murders literally impossible. While Hill tries to crack Tyler, DCI Carol Jordan and her team must mount a desperate undercover operation to trap the murderer-a decision that will have terrible consequences.

As the tension mounts, a mixture of psychological insight and dogged detective work leads inexorably to a terrifying climax where Tony faces one of the most perverse killers he has ever encountered.
streetwise Minneapolis deputy police chief Lucas Davenport is beleaguered by perplexing females. Charged with saving the political life of Rose Marie Roux, the ambitious police chief who has her eye on a Senate seat, he's given the assignment of tracking to ground the sex-crazed perpetrator of a series of murders of young women. Davenport's unwelcome colleague in this case is feminist Meagan Connell, an abrasive State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator who's obsessed with catching the killer before she dies of cancer. Also bedeviled by the ill-timed assignment of a new partner, a yuppie who was formerly assigned to the grade schools as "Officer Friendly" and who happens to be the husband of the mayor's niece, Davenport is additionally saddled with the mystifying death of an elderly woman who died rather conveniently, freeing some local hoods to profit from a real-estate scam. Juxtaposing the dark consciousness of the sex-fixated murderer against the narrative perspective of Davenport, Sandford builds a compelling counter-rhythm of suspense. The narrative is sensitively embued with Davenport's humaneness as, in awe, he watches Connell courageously fight to postpone her impending death. Yet, credibly flawed, the cop also displays a roving eye when he's momentarily distracted from his deep commitment to the lovely physician Weather Karkinnen by a beautiful and seductive TV anchor.
Pax Peyton Ford and Rosa Macario are both New York City judges. More than that, they have bonds of deep affection that go back to when the older Pax played the part of mentor to Rosa, helping to guide her from a childhood in the barrio to a place on the judicial bench. Now each is a candidate for the next vacancy in the state high court. Their friendship could easily survive such competition, but when they are drawn to the same man, a painful rivalry begins. Leonard Scholer is the dynamic defense attorney who initially courted Pax, but she breaks things off when he enters the sensational child-custody case over which she presides. Leonard is soon involved with Rosa. The custody case throws Pax into the center of a maelstrom of political and social pressure. As she struggles to maintain order, she becomes aware that Leonard is grooming Rosa to supplant her in his life - and in the unspoken struggle for the appellate court seat. Yet she is also in despair of losing her life-long friendship with a woman she considers a sister. Compellingly told, Trials weaves together courtroom drama, romantic turmoil, and bonds of friendship set against a shimmering backdrop of power and big-city life. By featuring two appealing heroines who pull the reader's heart in opposing directions, Anne Tolstoi Wallach has created a masterful drama that explores divided loyalties and crucial choices, raising women's fiction to a new level of insight and illumination.
Along came Rules of Deception. Was it really a return to the big blockbuster of the 70’s and 80’s? Critics certainly were embracing it with gusto. So it was with some excitement and no small amount of skepticism that I picked up the book. The story started like a rocket and picked up speed from there. By page 20, I knew the critics had gotten it right. Rules of Deception was the very definition of a blockbuster: a lone, intrepid hero battling immense odds to save the world from a cataclysmic battle while also regaining the love of a fallen woman.

Now, Reich gives us Rules of Vengeance. Sequels are rarely as good as the original, so again, I was skeptical. And yet, Rules of Vengeance turns out to be that rare exception—where the novel not only stands up to its predecessor, but actually takes the story and characters in new—and completely surprising—directions. Again we meet Dr. Jonathan Ransom, a surgeon for Doctors Without Borders. The story begins with his arrival in London to deliver an address at a prestigious international medical conference, and it takes off from there at mach speed, offering more twists than the Monaco Grand Prix. I’m not going to give away any of the unexpected plot turns (and there are many), but I will say that once again, Ransom quickly finds himself in trouble not of his own making. And, once again, he is forced to maneuver between the good guys and the bad guys in order to figure out just what he’s been pulled into, and then make show more sure that no one else suffers because of it. The stakes are sky high. The locales are exotic. The plot is ripped from tomorrow’s headlines and Reich controls the story with a deft hand from beginning to end.

What’s particularly appealing about Jonathan Ransom is he is not a spy or a trained assassin. He is, in fact, the opposite: a doctor who has devoted his life to helping others—a loner working outside political boundaries who exemplifies the best in us all. But like each of us, he has a dark side that is both frightening and compelling. You do not want to make this man angry.
