Really Really Really good book! I did not understand the title at first but after reading the last page it all made sense. Kedi could not give up on those people because she is such a caring and loving person. This book is set during the time of the Great Depression in America but from the point of view of people in Africa. A little girl named Kedi finds out that many people do not have money in New York to eat and she wants to help. She knows many people in her own village do not have money, but she asks anyway. Soon everyone gives money to help the people in New York City. After reading the author's note, I was touched to read that this was inspired by a true story. To see people come together during times like this is amazing. I thought about the earthquake in Haiti and how so many people came together! Thank you for recommending this book!
I really like this book. It had many different aspects to it. It told a story of the children's 100 day of school, which many classes still do like I did in elementary school. This book could be used in a math lesson because it reviews counting by 10's. Lastly the students in the book raise money for a town that was just hit by a hurricane. Students could relate to this book in many ways and I feel that it would apply to every student in at least one way. I would like to read this story in my classroom.
This is a great collection of poems about the city. They are all about different things in the city from all children's point of view. Some of these things are sidewalk chalk, the laundromat, or the pool. This book is also very diverse, it includes many different types of people doing the activities and doing them together. The illustrations in this book really make the poems come alive. If the illustrations were not so detailed and colorful I would probably not care for this book.
I did not enjoy this book. I felt it was too long and I lost interest and then just got confused about the story. The only thing I liked about the story is that it ended the same way it started. It tells what each of the animals are doing on this special day when the hunters are about to hunt. There is a lot of repetition in this story each time added a different part. I would not recommend this book for poetry.
I really liked this book. This book was very basic, and I feel that it would be easy for children to understand. The book shows one sentence and one picture at a time, which makes it easy to understand each part. I feel this book is good for all ages even though it is labeled for babies. I have taken chemistry classes before and this was an easy way to understand the beginnings of physics! I wish I could have had this book a few semesters ago. The pictures were also very helpful!
This book is a very creative story in the form of a poem. It is about all the animals going to the sock hop and the music they hear. The animals dance about and the music and the dances are described. This was a catchy tune and I enjoyed reading another book by Jonathon London.
This was a nice collection of poems about a little girls home. I really enjoyed reading these poems. I thought about my own home and how my house is cozy, the smells, and the sounds. This could be a great lesson for students to write poems about their home and reflect on their lives.
This is the story of a furry four-footed creature as he walks around the world. This book shows all the things he sees and the noises he hears but he never makes a sound. This was an interesting rhyming book in the form of a catchy tune. While reading I found myself starting to sing the words. For me although the words were clever it was just a weird read for me.
This is a collection of poems about children being small in the big world. It showcases the challenges they face each day such as at school, in a crowd, and during recess. Anyone can relate to these poems whether they are grown or young because everyone was small once. These poems show that it is not always bad to be small and that one day you will grow but for now enjoy being a kid.
Too much surprise I really enjoyed this book! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! Normally I am not a fan of poetry but in this form, I really enjoy the read! I have read a couple of different books like this, but I had forgotten how emotional and intriguing they can be! This is the story of a little girl named Serafina and her family who live in Haiti. A lot is asked of Serafina at such a young age and a lot of guilt rides on her after her first baby brother died. Every day she helps her Manman and Gogo with the chores around the house. Serafina and her best friend Julie Marie long to go to school like their friend Nadia. Disaster strikes when a flood destroys their home, killing people, and forces them to move. They build a new house and begin a garden to make money. Serafina finds Julie Marie again but not long after she is sent to live with her "aunt" and finally go to school. Serafina is also allowed to go to school after her baby brother is born and earning enough money. Disaster strikes again with an earthquake when Serafina is trying to find the doctor to help her second brother. On her journey she finds Julie Marie and her papa in the aftermath. They begin their journey back home to find Manman, Gogo and Gregory. There is so much more I could say about this story, but I think the review would be pages long. Serafina is such a strong individual that never gives up which I love about her character. I love how all the characters play such a big part in the show more story. They each teach a lesson to Serafina hidden beneath the words of the book. I think the moral of this story is to never, ever take things for granted and to be happy and grateful with what you have. Things can change in seconds and may not always be for the better. Never give up hope or lose faith! show less
This was a very interesting story of Helen Keller. This is a biography of her life. Something interesting about it is how it describes her senses such as she smells a fragrance and she knows it is her mother. A lot of the story is about her time getting used to her teacher Annie Sullivan. She does not like her in the beginning but slowly warms up to her eventually loving her. I could never image being deaf and blind that must be so difficult. Helen Keller really is an inspiration to everyone!
Today is a big day for Dustin at school. His friends Dave and Skippy are coming to school. Dusting is in second grade and has down syndrome. The book shows him going to separate teachers during the day to work for occupational therapy and to work math and reading. Dustin has a hard time focusing throughout the day because he cannot contain his excitement. Finally, Dave and Skippy arrive and even play a special song for Dustin! This is an awesome story! It shows how Dustin participates with the other children but also how he has times where he does different classes for himself. This would be a good book for a child with down syndrome to read. I enjoyed reading this and the pictures were great.
This is a wonderful sweet story of life on the islands in the Caribbean for children. It showcases their life from the time they wake up until they they go to bed and dream. The water color illustrations in this book are wonderful. I really liked this book because I felt as though I was experiencing the day with the children because of the vivid pictures. I enjoy how Isadora decided to convey the story by saying for example "Where wind meets hills, we run." I feel that it connects their lives to their island.
This is the story from a small town in South Africa. The town is waiting for the workers from the mines to return. The children cannot wait to see their fathers after ten long months apart. They make instruments out of materials and play songs as they wait. When night comes the fathers have still not returned leaving the town wondering where they are. In the morning the fathers finally return at the crossroads. This was a wonderful book written by the author after taking trips to South Africa and seeing how they live. Even though this town struggles and many live in what looks to be tin shacks they are still filled with happiness and hope.
This book is composed of beautiful poems about nature. The poems are about the colors in nature and describes those items of color in nature. This book of poetry would be helpful to teach poetry but also if can help students learn their colors. The illustrations add to the power of the poetry used in this book.
This was an interesting book to read. It honestly left me flustered during reading and after. Children are given hats and they must determine the color of their hat based on the others around them hats. This book really makes you think and is a text you must read slow to understand the information being presented. After reading I definitely understand why gifted children would love this book.
This is a fun counting book using spotted creatures that are from the sky to the sea. This is a creative book that describes animals that are spotted and how many are on each page. For example, "Slinking, prowling, hunting spots...two sleek jaguars". After counting to ten it reviews all the numbers from 1-10. This is a wonderful book that incorporates math, science because of the animals, and English because of the describing words for the animals spots.
This is a great beginning for students to read when learning about time. It is an interactive book with transparent pages. The book shows the different types of clocks used. It explains how time works and the different lengths of times and when those are used. The book also incorporates science because it talks about time in the seasons, the phases of the moon, and the different parts of the world being at different times. I enjoyed reading this book. I struggled with time as a children and I think this could help children understand time.
This is a funny math book used to teach about division and factoring. This is the story about 100 hundred hungry ants on their way to a picnic. The ants think they are going to slow so they divide their lines to try to get to the picnic faster. They start with two lines of fifty and eventually end with ten lines of ten when they get to the picnic. Sadly when they arrive all the food is gone because they took to long dividing their lines! This is a clever book to teach children. It shows the ants being divided and students are able to see the ants in the lines and count them. This book was a creative way to teach students about division by having a fun concept such as hungry ants.
This interactive science book has students explore the different types of light and how they are used in our world. I find this book very engaging and interacting because some of the pages are transparent and when the pages are flipped it shows a different image. For example, a shadow of a bunny is showed and then when you flip the page it shows the other side of the shadow with the hand and explains how shadows are created. This book is also very informative for student.
This is a beginning book for readers who are learning to read and about animals. The book names a variety of different animals and facts about them when they are born, at a young age and how they grow. This book is very informative and educational for students! I enjoyed reading this book! I would have this in my classroom for students to learn about animals and science and to read for enjoyment.
This is a simple book for beginner readers. It talks about the different types of animals and the work they do. This is a book that can teach students how the animals help us in their work. There is a map included at the end of the book where the pictures of the animals came from. I found it interesting that the author painted the pictures of the animals that he saw around the world. This is a science book because of the information on animals but also could be social studies because of the map included at the end.
The War I finally Won was another wonderful book by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. This is continuation of Ada and Jamie's story after Susan rescued them from their home town after it was bombed. Ada has surgery to fix her foot and the evil in her life, her mam, has died. Ada now starts to overcome her mam's death and begins to heal from all the abuse and hardship she caused Ada to endure. Susan's' house was bombed, and they now live in the Thornton's cottage along with Mrs. Thornton. Ada and Maggie remain close, but heartbreak strikes when Jonathon dies in the war. A German Jewish teen named Ruth seeks refuge with the family and is to be taught math by Susan. Everyone has trouble accepting Ruth because she is a German, an enemy to them in this war. Ada is the first to accept Ruth and let her ride butter. I think Ada did this because she knew what it was like to feel different and unwanted and she does not want anyone to feel that way. I really enjoyed reading this book and would love to read “The War that Saved my Life” and this book again! Bradley is such a wonderful author and would love to explore her other books.
I absolutely love this book! I was introduced to this book in an education class this semester and would love to read this to children in a classroom. This is a counting book that uses pairs of feet to count from 1-10 and then to 100 by 10's. This book can be used to teach addition or multiplication to children. For each number an animal or human is used to make a number. For example, an insect and a snail are used to make 7. To make 30, three crabs can be used or ten people and one crab. I find this book would be very useful when teaching counting to young children. The numbers are given but you are also able to count each set of legs or feet to understand why they make up a number.
Even though this book was published in 1976 and the illustrations are not the most appealing I found that this was a very good book. This book breaks down the different concepts of algebra such as equations. I really like how this book includes pictures for each of the examples of math problems. This is good to help students see how the problems are being worked out. I find that students could also work the problems in the book as they read to gain more knowledge on the concepts of algebra. I felt that the very beginning of the book really grabbed your attention with trying to solve a riddle. This left me wanting to know what the rest of the book held!
This is the story about Professor X and his class learning about counting using the power of tens. The popcorn machine has exploded, and popcorn is going everywhere, and the students are trying to count each piece individually. This is when Professor X and his dog come to save the students. He teaches them an easier way to count by using the power of tens. They explore all kinds of different numbers and each page the number increases and soon the children learn that numbers are infinite and there is no biggest number in the world. This book uses real world experience to explain numbers such as 5 people are born on Earth every second and that there are 400,000 hairs on a square inch o a sea otter's pelt. I enjoyed the concept of the book to help students understand the power of tens, but I do not like the style of the book. It is set up in comic form and is often hard to follow. I felt that there was too much going on for each page and it was overwhelming to read and understand what was going on.
This is a wonderfully written educational book on rocks. This would be wonderful to have in a library when students are learning about rocks! There is so much information on the different types of rocks and how they are used by animals and humans. There is a main word for each page such as "old" and then it explains how the rocks relate to this word. For this word, different types of rocks are shown with how old they are and where they were found. The illustrations for this book were such an added touch that really makes the book engaging for the reader. I really enjoyed reading this book and wish I would have had it when learning about geology in elementary school and even in college!
This is the biography of Barnum Brown and his life and discovery of dinosaurs. This book highlights Barnum's journey through discovering dinosaurs and all the dinosaurs he found. He became the greatest known dinosaur hunter. The book begins with him as a child always longing to search for dinosaurs. Soon his dream came true when he was hired by the American museum of Natural History to expand their exhibits to include fossils of dinosaurs. Barnum was very successful in his findings and many say he could smell the bones of dinosaurs. This is a very educational book for children to read when learning about fossils and dinosaurs. I found this book very informative because I did not know that Barnum Brown discovered the fossils of many dinosaurs including the T-Rex.
This is a very educational books for children to read on saber toothed cats. It goes into detail about how the cats lived and also what happened to them throughout the years and when and why they became extinct. Something I like that this book has is the scientific names for each of the animals shown. This is a wonderful book for students to read and learn about the animals that used to live long ago.
WOW! This book really blew me away. I was not sure what to expect but this is one of my most favorite books ever. It was so emotional! Once I picked up the book I could not put it down. This story was so touching and amazing. To witness the Brady's story and their history just leaves me lost for words. I love the addition of Fumiko to the story and the children in Japan wanting to know more about Hana's life. Fumiko's dedication was inspiring. The pictures made the book so much more real than it already was because I was able to see what these people looked like instead of having to visualize them on my own. As upset as I was when I found out that Hana was killed in Auschwitz, I am so happy that Fumiko was able to find George, give him closer, and make others aware of their story. I do not think I would have wanted this story written any other way. For me it just flowed so well experiencing Hana's journey and then where Fumiko was at with her research. I think Hana would have been very proud to know that her story touched and taught so many people over the years. This past summer I visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and reading this book just brought back all those emotions I had while in the museum. This book teaches so much, and I would absolutely love to share it with children. If you are as interested in this story as much as I am I really suggest taking a look at http://www.hanassuitcase.ca/ for more information and memories from friends and family!
