This is a precious book about being proud of who you are no matter what others say or do. Molly Lou becomes discouraged when other students pick on her for her looks and abilities. Her grandmother boosts her confidence and encourages her to "stand tall". This is a great book for inferencing and character education.
This is a great book to read aloud. It takes traditional fables and tweaks them to fit a fourth grader's problems. Students will giggle out loud at the lovesick librarian, the poetic Lil Ditty, and many more memorable characters. Fourth graders will love this book and hearing their teacher read it aloud.
This is a perfect book for a librarian, reading teacher, or even a social studies teacher wanting to show the positive and negative cosequences of our actions. This story about a town who decides to not read anymore will help children see what a world without books or education can be like. I would recommend this book as a light-hearted nudge to reluctant readers. This book is a joy to read for pleasure as well.
A great read for the K-12 social studies teacher needing background historical knowledge of the founding of our nation and government. It is not too dry or boring. It sticks to story form and offers some amazing, little known facts of our founding fathers.
This book of poems hooked me in third grade. My teacher had a cassett tape of Shel Silverstein reading and singing the poems and I thought it was the grandest thing. His poems are relevant to children and adults. The poems are far-fetched and imaginative on one page, but on the next, have real world problems of an annoying sister or missing school. I recommend this book to teach children poetry and to encourage them to love poetry and writing.
This is a fantastic book to read aloud to children. My students love this book. They are already familiar with Roald Dahl's works of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but many have not heard of this book. There is also a great movie produced by Jim Henson to go with the book. This is a yearly favorite!
