The world's salty seas and oceans are full of fishes. You can also find fishes in fresh water lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. There are more than 25000 different kinds of fishes on Earth. All fishes have two things in common- a backbone and gills. But, fishes come in many different shapes. Some are as flat as pancakes. Others can blow themselves up like a balloon. A few look like lumpy rocks or slithering snakes. Many fishes have dark backs and pale bellies. Their backs match the dark water below them, so birds, bears, and snakes huntingfrom above cannot see them. When others, sea lions, or bigger fishes looking up from below, the pale bellies blend in with the sunlight from above. The shape and location of a fish's fins determine how well it can swim. Fishes with slim fins and narrow tail are fast swimmers. A sailfish's fins help it cruise the ocean at 60 miles per hour.

Antaractica is that magical land of the far south of the world. It's so wild and beautiful that it's hard to describe what it feels like to be there. It is coldest, windest place on Earth, with tempertures as low as -89℃. However, one kind of bird survive there in large numbers-the penguin.
Emperor and Adelie penguins live in large colonies on the Antaractic mainland. However , only Emperor penguins can survive here in the extreme cold of winter. Penguins can't fly and they look clumsy and helpless on land, but in the sea it's another story. Their wings have become flippers to help them swim. In fact, penguins are such good swimmers that they seem to "fly" through the water. King penguins can dive as deep as 240 meters in search of squid and fish. Kind penguins lay only one egg, They don't build a nest for it. Instead they balance it on top of their feet so that it doesn't touch the ground. Aspecial flap of skin on the penguin's tummy, called a brood pouch, covers the egg and keeps the cold out.

This book is written about falcons. Falcons are the fastest bird in this world.
Many beautiful photos are in this book. So, you can enjoy this book only see it.
Falcons that lives in America and Canada are discribed in this book.
There are 61 kinds, or species of falcons all over the world. But, only five of them breed in the United States and Canada, but they include two of the most famous of these birds. One is the Arctic-nesting glyfalcon, the largest, most powerful falcon in the world. The other is the crow-size peregrine falcon, possibly the fastest flying bird on Earth.
Falcons prefer cliff ledges that have a floor of loose dirt or fine graval, and an overhang that protects them from hail and rain and shadesthem from the hot afternoon sun. Reserchers in Alaska found a ledge that had been used by nesting peregrines for at least 100 years. A gyrfalcon nesting ledge discovered in Arctic Canada was used foe so many years that it was buried under 2 feet of bones mixed with old falcon droppings. To my surprise, in Australia, falconshave used one ledge for at least 16000 years!!
