'The Story of Jumping Mouse' is a Native American legend about a little mouse whose goal is to make it to the far-off land. He meets a few animals who need his help along the way which he is happy to do. He shows all of these animals a selfless willingness to help. When he finally arrives a magic frog rewards him and transforms him into an eagle.
'Adelita' is similar to the cinderella story except that it is told about a young Mexican girl who is left with her stepmother and stepsisters after her loving parents pass away. He nanny is similar to the fairy godmother in that she pushes Adelita to attend the party of a young man in town. She goes and they fall in love, much like the original story. This story, however, is set in Mexico and shows the reader beautilful images from her hometown.
'Rosa' tells the story about Rosa Parks, a very inspirational African American woman who, in 1955, stood up for herself in a bus when a bus driver told her to give up her seat for a white passenger. She worked very hard with the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King, Jr. Parks' story inspired many to participate in the Montgomery bus boycott and changed the lives of so many Americans.
'Martin's Big Words' tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr. The reader learns about his inspirational story and shares quotes from his life. The illustrations which Collier adds to the book are so unique and are done in collage. The book begins with his childhood and continues through his lifetime and ends with his death.
This book is uses rhyming and fun art to teach the reader about the alphabet. Martin chose a fun new way to help children learn about their ABC's by introducing each letter to the reader. Each letter climbs up a coconut tree and eventually the tree can't hold them all and they all fall down, hurting themselves on the way down.
Mercy is a pig who is treated like a child by his doting owners. They tuck him in at night, feed him toast and butter and let him sleep in bed with them. One night Mercy is in bed with his owners and the floor gives out under all of their weight. His owners tell Mercy to get help and the pig runs away. The owners assume that he is getting help but the reader finds out that Mercy is just running away to get some cookies from the neighbor. She causes trouble with her neighbor who calls for help. The fire department comes and actually saves Mercy's owners and Mercy gets all of the glory.
'Nate the Great' is about a young boy who loves to play detective. One day Nate gets a call from his friend Annie who needs his help. He uses his detective skills to help find her picture that she drew of her dog. Nate searches a few different places and finally finds it in Annie's little brother's room. He solves the case and is paid in pancakes.
'The Hunger Games' is about a young girl who was selected by the government to participate in The Hunger Games. The different districts compete in these games which are televised to the people of this post-apocalyptic world. The point of the games is to have a boy and girl child from each district that fight the other districts to their death. The district who come out on top gets awarded and sends a message to the other districts. These games are a way for the government to show their power and for the districts to prove their own power as well. The main character, Katniss, has been chosen and becomes friends with the boy from her district and they work together to survive in the end.
'Everywhere Babies' is a fun book about babies and the many things that they do. It shows us how babies are different and shows us the activities that they might do everyday. It shows them being kissed, fed, carried, dressed, rocked and loved by everyone they know.
'Little Beauty' introduces a sweet gorilla who learns sign language at a zoo. He lived a very good life but still felt very sad. One day he signed to the zookeepers "I want a friend." So, they gave him a kitten. The gorilla and the kitten lived very happy together until gorilla broke a television and the zoo keepers wanted to take the kitten away. Beauty signed "I did it" and all was well.
This book is a guessing book about animals. The book will show 2 pages of tails, noses, ears, eyes, feet, mouths and noses and the reader is supposed to guess what animal each body part belongs to. It then explains what unique thing each animal can do with their bodies.The art used in this book is very simply done, it actually reminds me of animals that children might create using colored paper. In the end there are a few pages telling us more about each animal which is introduced.
This is a wordless book about a family who has just grown by one. They have a new baby and each new page shows a new chapter in this girls life. As she grows, so does the neighborhood that they live in. They get involoved with changing an abandoned shop in a community garden and as the girl gets married near the end of the book she gets married at the garden showing us how they have changed their neighborhood.
'Clementine' is about a very unique third grader who gets into many mischievous situations. She cuts her friends hair, cuts her own hair, colors her friends hair and her own. Basically she causes much trouble but not on purpose. Although she is a different kid her parents still adore her and praise her for her unique personality.
Such a fun book that tells the story of the Boss baby who arrives at his new office (home) and takes charge of his employees (parents). He damands their attention and is very unhappy with his employees most of the time. He holds meetings (cries) at everytime of the night. One day he tried to call a meeting his usual way (screaming) and it doesn't work. So, he calls his employees names..."mama and dada." This makes the whole office very happy, until Boss baby realizes that there is more work to do!!
The Brooklyn bridge is sometimes known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and was an extremely difficult structure to design and build in the late 1800's. The engineer of this amazing bridge crippled himself in the process and still was able to continue to finish it from his bedroom. Through many deaths and years this bridge was built and still is structurally sound even though it has been 128 years.
This folktale is on that most people know. We get to know Goldilocks, who in this book is a bit of a brat. She is told to not go in the forest because it is dangerous, but this makes her want to do it even more. Goldilocks comes upon a house which is empty. She makes herself right at home. First eating their food, sitting in their chairs and finally ending up in their beds. Little does she know, she is in a family of bears' home. They soon come home and scare her so she runs away and learns her lesson!
This book informs the reader about the different aspects of Ancient Egypt. We learn a quick history which discusses the people of the time. We learn what they believed in, what the different class systems were, what they wore and in the end we learn more about mummies and that pyramids exist only to store the pharaohs so that they will life forever in the afterlife.
'Alphabet City' is an book showing which shows the ABC in a new way. Johnson shows the reader how the alphabet can be found all around us All of his paintings of the alphabet are in the city.
Train stop is a wordless book that shows the story of a little girl who is taking a train with her family. She is very entertained by the train and everything that is outside her window. While the train is delayed she sees a group of small people who need her help. She jumps off the train and helps one of them down from a tree. She goes home and sees their airplane fly by to drop off a present. A tree, the ending page shows her, a while later enjoying a giant tree in front of her house.
The story begins with a babymouse who tells of her loves for pets. She just doesn't have a great history of being very good with them. She has had many different kinds of pets and all have escaped from her. What she really wants is a dog though and when she finally finds one on the street she realizes that they are more work than she thought!
This story tells of a tiny kitten which was found in the return box at a library. The kitten is soon named Dewey and becomes the library mascot. He loves his job until he meets the children who come into the library. They are a bit rough on him but Dewey learns how to deal with them and ends up loving his new position.
Max is a michievious young boy who has a very creative imagination. One night he dresses up like a wild animal and causes trouble for his mother. She punishes him by sending him to bed without dinner. Max goes to his room and imagines a world with giant beasts. They seem really scary at first but Max becomes their leader by standing his ground and looking deeply into their eyes.He enjoys his time there but eventually gets homesick and goes home.
This book starts off like the regular three little pigs story but it changes when the wolf blows them right off the page, into other fairytale stories. The pigs travel through the tales and finally return safely home.
Wilbur is a naked mole rat who doesn't want to be naked any longer. He starts to wear clothes and when his community finds out about it they have a lot of issues with it. When the oldest naked mole rat finds this out his secret he too decides to wear clothes.
This book is a rhyming book about animals and colors where different animals see each other and rhyme about eachother. The basic shapes and colors of this book would create a fun, learning book for young children.
This story tells of a dog from the city who has come to the country and he meets a frog. They become friends and see each other through the different seasons. The dog comes back and doesn't see the frog again. He eventually finds another friend and learns how to move on. The beautiful pictures really show the emotion of the animals.
Amos McGee is a zookeeper who every animal loves. He loves every animal at the zoo and when he takes a day off the animals decide to visit him. The illustrations are wonderful and show the personality of all of the animals so well.
This story tells of a girl named Flora who has a little brother that annoys her. They go outside a strong wind carries him away. Flora tries to save him and gets taken in the wind as well. They travel through the sky and she saves him.
Dave is a slave from the 19th century and he shows the process of making a pot in this beautiful book. His poetry and life story is in the book and readers learn how he felt about his people. He was a poet and artist, this book is very important for children to read because it involves a story about an African American slave who succeeded in what he wanted to do.
'Diary of a Wombat' is a very funny tale of a wombat. It tells of a week in the life of this cute creature. She comes upon house and decides that they are her new neighbors. The hilarious humor in this book is sarcastic and silly and would make anyone laugh. She calls her new human neighbors good pets and tests their willingness to be patient with her. This book somewhat illudes to the fact that she is a wild animal and the people are in her space, an important thing to talk about with kids when it comes to protecting wildlife. Jackie French goes at in a fun way though, hopefully parents and teachers will talk about this aspect of this funny book.
