This book's message is disturbing! We've got a tree (read by most as female/feminine) that can't stop GIVING (to the point where it kills her) and a boy who won't stop TAKING -- and we're supposed to glorify that and coo over how sweet it is. It's not sweet! It's an abusive relationship! What is this, "Three Cheers for the Patriarchy" for toddlers?
Is the problem that one character happens to be a tree? Actually recognize the tree as a woman, and we could call it "The Giving Mother." Little Boy keeps taking and taking, until finally Mom keels over -- but at least sonny can USE HER DEAD BODY AS A CHAIR!
Awww. Heart-warming.
