The first edition of this book appeared in 1904, and this edition was first published in 1927. This dictionary is for serious students of the language, especially those studying the older works.
This book follows the career and exploits of Henry during the Easter Revolt and the Anglo-Irish War before Irish independence. This is a very good read. Michael Collins is portrayed in this book as a cold blooded murderer, a psychopath. This makes me wonder about Doyle's attitude toward Collins, and why he portrayed Collins in such a way.
A magisterial collection of essays about Irish history up to 1167. This book had been available before as a very expensive hardback -- this paperback edition was published this year. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the archeology of Ireland, or the early history.
This is an anthropological and sociological study of a small community in the west of Ireland. It is clearly written and documented, with little jargon.
A very good book about the Young Ireland movement and the fate of its leaders in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The book also provides a detailed background to the Fenian movements and the Land Wars. I found the biographical information about William Brian Smith and Thomas Meagher very interesting and informative as well as the account of the voyage of the Catalpa.
A very good book documenting waves of Irish immigration to the US in the 19th century. Very useful too, because it outlines conditions and problems present in Ireland which lead to immigration. Miller makes a particularly provocative thesis about the Irish language, viz. that the grammatical structure of Irish influenced Irish peasants to be passive in the face of English colonialism.
This short book is a very good biography of St. Patrick. Using St. Patrick's surviving written work, Letter to Coroticus and Confession, Freeman paints of picture of what Patrick experienced in the late Roman Empire -- and as a slave and then bishop to the Irish. Freeman provides good historical background about Rome, the church and Ireland; and judicious interpretations and extrapolations from the written works. I highly recommend.
