“Loki’s Wolves” by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong is a great book about Norse legends and myths. In this story, the descendants of the most powerful Norse gods like Thor and Loki live in South Dakota. Matt Thorsen is the son of the town sheriff and a descendant of Thor. He is only 13 years old but has already discovered he has some powers of Thor that are hard to control. Matt’s cousins, Fen and Laurie Brekke, also live in the town and are descendants of the god, Loki. Since Loki is one of Thor’s worst enemies, Matt has never gotten along with his cousins. But, when Matt finds out that he is the town’s chosen hero for Ragnarok, he teams up with Fen and Laurie to find the descendants of other Norse gods. Ragnarok is supposed to be the end of the world, and the gods (or their descendants) must fight monsters to prevent another ice age. Matt, Fen and Laurie begin an adventure to find the other descendants, but they are just kids and don’t know where to start. Luckily, they are given a little help from other mythological creatures of the Norse legends. The book ends in a cliffhanger, so Matt and the others are still on their quest.
“Loki’s Wolves” was an outstanding book. It is the first book in the Blackwell Pages series, and I can’t wait to read Book 2,” Odin’s Ravens” which is supposed to be released this month. I really liked this book because I enjoy mythology. Before this book, I only really read about Greek and Roman myths, but this book show more is about Norse mythology. “Loki’s Wolves” taught me a lot about Viking legends and Norse gods. I would recommend this book to all of my friends. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes action-packed stories. show less

"Emperor Pickletine Rides the Bus" is the last book in the Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger. In this book, the seventh graders of McQuarrie Middle School are finally going on their field trip to Washington DC. This is the field trip they had to fight for in the last book, Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue. Tommy, Remi, Cassie, Sara, Amy and Mike are very excited about the field trip, but it starts badly because Principal Rabbski bans cell phones, origami figures, and all paper on the field trip. In the story, everyone divides into buddy groups. They are supposed to divide based on the museum they want to visit, but the kids just pick who they want to hang out with for the day. One group goes on the slow yellow school bus while the others get to ride on fast chartered buses. The kids on the yellow bus are upset that they are on the same, boring school bus they always ride, but kids on the comfy bus have to deal with a weird chaperone named Mr. Good Clean Fun who is a germaphobe and has a monkey puppet named Soapy. The ride gets worse when Harvey ignores the origami ban and makes Emperor Pickletine who has a pickle face and wants kids to join the Sour Side. Luckily, Dwight has some fruit roll-ups and makes a Fruitigami Yoda. Fruitigami Yoda uses the Force to rescue the kids from some bad situations like being stuck on the side of the road with only astronaut ice cream to eat.
"Emperor Pickletine Rides the Bus" is an awesome book. I would definitely recommend it to all show more my friends. In fact, I would recommend the whole Origami Yoda series because these books are so fun to read. I enjoy the Star Wars references, and I like that the characters in the book are in middle school like me. I’m really sad that the series is ending. Even though this is supposed to be the last book, I still keep hoping for another one. One of the characters in the book (Tommy) even says, “the end this is not!” I hope it’s really not the end. show less

“Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods” is a book by Rick Riordan, which is like an encyclopedia for the Greek Gods written from Percy Jackson’s perspective. This book gives the history and background for gods, goddesses, Protogenoi, Titans, monsters, demigods, and some famous mortals. While telling you about the gods and other people, Percy tells funny stories about all of the ones that he has met. He makes fun of some of the gods and Titans that he doesn’t like, such as Ares and Kronos. Percy starts the book by describing the relationship between Mother Earth and Father Sky, and he explains how the world went from the Protogenoi to the Titans to the Greek Gods and Goddesses. Percy also talks about his relationship with his father, Poseidon. He wishes he knew his father better, and he doesn’t like that many of the gods and goddesses do not talk to or really know anything about their demigod children.
“Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods” is an excellent book. I really liked that Rick Riordan wrote this book to tell people more about the world of Percy Jackson. The Percy Jackson book series is definitely worth reading, and this is a great part of that collection. I would rate this book with 5 out of 5 stars. I would also recommend this book to all of my friends and to anyone interested in Greek mythology. I like that the book gives you Percy’s opinion because it makes learning about mythology even more fun. This book lets you imagine what it would be like if gods and show more goddesses really lived. show less

"My Life as a Cartoonist" is one of the books in a series by Janet Tashjian. The main character in this story is Derek Fallon, who is in middle school. At the beginning of the book, a new student arrives at school, and his name is Umberto. Umberto has a spinal defect and must use a wheelchair, and Derek wants to do something to help him. Derek has been training his pet money, Frank, to help handicapped people with their everyday lives, so he wants Frank to help Umberto. Unfortunately, Umberto doesn’t want any help from Derek or Frank, and he’s really mean about it. Umberto resents the fact that Derek is trying to help him, so he starts making jokes about Derek. Umberto also starts stealing Derek’s cartoon ideas about “Super Frank,” the super hero monkey, and Umberto pretends that they are his ideas. Umberto also picks a fight with Derek on the playground makes it look like Derek started it, so he will get in trouble. To try to make the boys get along, their teacher, Ms McCoddle, makes them do a school project together. They have to create a cartoon as a team. While doing the project, Derek and Umberto figure out that they have a lot in common like drawing, cartoons, and love for surfing. Umberto can’t really surf because of his wheelchair, but Derek finds someone who can help kids with disabilities go surfing. Derek and Umberto have the best day and become great friends.
"My Life as a Cartoonist" was a pretty good book. It wasn’t as interesting as many of the show more books I’ve read, so would only rate it with 3 out 5 stars. I don’t think I would choose to read the other books in this series because I thought the plot of this one was a little boring. I also thought the cartoons in the book were not that great or funny. The book did have a good morale about how bullying is wrong and can hurt people. It also showed that bullies aren’t always the people you would expect. In this book, Umberto, who is in a wheelchair, is the bully. That is not the image that most people have when they think of bullies. I’m glad I finished this book, but I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends. show less

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" is the ninth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. The Long Haul is about a boy named Greg Heffley and his crazy family road trip. After Greg's mom read in a magazine that road trips are fun for families, she thought it was a good idea to go on one. First the family drives around for a while with no real plan. Then they stop at a supermarket, and Greg's brother, Rodrick, goes inside with some money to buy "essential" things for the night at a motel. He bought a frozen pizza, cinnamon roll dough, Cheese Curls, a 2 Liter bottle of soda, and gum. His mom wasn't happy. Then they meet a crazy family that they call the "Beardos." They try to stay away from them because the “Beardo” father is mad at Greg for making his son cry, no matter how hard they try, they keep running into them all along the road trip. Next, at a carnival they win a pig, which Greg's other brother Manny loves. But, after the pig bites Greg, his family gives it to a petting zoo, and Manny is very sad. Then they go to a water park called Soak Central and lose the key to their locker, and they were convinced the “Beardos” took it. After the water park, the Heffley’s car broke down because it overheated, and some Spanish-speaking people were trying to help them. The funniest part was that the little brother, Manny, who is only 3 years old, spoke perfect Spanish. He had been listening to Spanish learning CDs in the car. When the family finally show more arrived home, Greg found the locker key from the water park in his pocket. At that point, he had three options: 1) Tell his mom and dad the truth and face the consequences, 2) put the key in Rodrick’s dirty laundry and let him take the blame, or 3) flush it down the toilet. The end of the book was like a make your own adventure story because you could see the outcome of each option. Greg never seemed to choose the right path, so it’s hard to believe that this story could ever have a happy ending.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney is an excellent series of books. This book, The Long Haul, was not my favorite of all nine books, but it was still very entertaining. I would easily rate this book with 5 out of 5 stars. The plot is interesting, and the misadventures of the Heffley family are hilarious. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to have a good laugh. You just have to read this book to make your own family seem normal. I would highly suggest that all middle school kids read this book. It is awesome! show less

"Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue" is the fifth book in the Origami Yoda series. In this book, Dwight was the puppet master for Princess Labelmaker. He uses Princess Labelmaker to convince Principal Rabbski to join the rebellion to stop the organization called FunTime. FunTime is trying to prepare students for their State Standards Test, but it is also taking away their elective classes. The students do like that and want their electives back. That is why there is an Origami Puppet rebellion. In the end, the rebellion is successful, and the students get their elective classes back. One of the classes is the LEGO Robots class, which sounds like an awesome class to me!
I really enjoyed reading "Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue." I have read all of the books in this series, and this was one of my favorites. This books combines two things that I really like: Star Wars and origami. I also liked that Princess Labelmaker's puppet master is a mystery until the very end of the story. The book had a good plot and kept my attention until the very end. I would recommend it to all my friends. I can't wait until the next book in the series is released. Unfortunately, it will be the final book in the series.

Hiccup is a viking boy who lives on the island of Berk. He has many adventures and goes on these adventures with his two friends, Fishlegs and Camacazi. In this adventure, he was in a 3 month long swimming race. In the race, he was captured by Norbert the Nutjob and imprisoned on the ship, the American Dream 2. While captured, he freed slaves and used dragon nip to put all of the crew on the American Dream 2 asleep. He was also attacked by a Leviathorgan, a prehistoric dragon. In the end, Hiccup and his friends made it back to shore safe and sound.
This book was outstanding! It is the best book in the "How to Train Your Dragon" series that I've read so far. The part of the story with the Leviathorgan dragon was heart pounding. You never knew when it was going to attack the ship, and I couldn't put the book down until I found out what was going to happen. Just waiting for the swimming race to start was made me tremble in my knees. I was really surprised when Hiccup won. It made me happy because he is such a great character. I would recommend this book to everyone!

Owen Brown is your average fourth grader. Or he was, until his best friend, Dana, disappeared. She disappeared right in front of his face - through the floor of the school! Owen's average life was turned upside down. He was determined to find Dana before anyone realizes she was missing. Owen sets out on a mysterious, mythological rescue mission with his friends, Jon and Sydney. He fights Argus, Cerberus, Myrmidon, Loki, and the Fenrir. But, what none of them know is that Dana's disappearance is part of a much larger riddle, and they're at the center of it.
Underworlds was a great book. It sent my heart pounding, and I only put it down when I had to do so. Including Norse and Greek mythology in one book was an awesome idea. I love mythology, so this book really suited me. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I think it has cyclopses, which are really cool. I would recommend this book to other students.
