The most well known child voice of the Holocaust is Anne Frank. However, Joy's fictionalized retelling of her Aunt Sylvia's childhood in Poland when the Nazi invade is just as interesting and has a happier ending.

Ramona Forever is a story young girls will really enjoy and even I can relate to dealing with a sibling and the quirky family dynamic of the Quimbys

I liked the child's perspective of hurricane katrina. The inclusion of two characters with the 'sight' provides a different, maybe less scary way of dealing with a devestating event. There is also an opportunity for vocabulary development as Lanesha learns new words too.

Bishop combines an I-Spy type of book with creatures of the forest. While there is a great variety of creatures to discover in this book the depth of coverage is lacking.

I have never heard of Grania O'Malley before. While I enjoyed the pastel drawing in the book I felt that the story was not as 3 dimensional as I would have liked.

Fleming writes an engrossing book that covers the life of Amelia Earhart from birth to her disappearance. She also includes fun facts about other facets of Amelia's life as well as the stories of a few who claim to have heard her voice over their radios after Itasca loses contact with her.

Selznick writes about a time period that many kids these day may not be aware of. The characters are engaging and the air of mystery surrounding Hugo's automata and Isabella's key keeps the pages turning. The drawing inbetween chunks of text are very detailed and bring the magic of the story to readers.

While the writing of the book is not anything special, the premise and the characters more than make up for it. It has humor and teaches some life lessons along the way. The illustration are a fun addition too.

Dicamillo provides an engaging story with a hero that anyone can relate too (even if he is a mouse). Her writing style invites the reader to be a part of and think deeper about the story and what it means. The movie that came out of this book has made it even more popular.

The poem format of the text is pleasently surprising and mimics the waves of the sea.

The basic plot points are familiar in the rendidtion of a Cinderella story. However, the difference might be too much for some readers. The unique illustration only add to the story.

The story of Cinderella is one that most children (esp. girls) are aware of and may know well; this one has a nice twist and gives a little background on the 'fairy godmother' character. The illustrations are pretty and gives a good feeling of Caribbean life and culture. The incorporation and repetition of Carribean/French words is nice too.

The illustrations were very appropriate for the subject of Diego Rivera. I also really appriciated how the author in the text provided ways for the reader to connect Diego's past to our present time.

The paintings are beautiful, the text is short enough that it flows between the pages which make it easy and enjoyable to read for kids. The author for the most part only uses the first of last name when mentioning the important African American men that came into her life. I did not know a few of them so I appriciated the short bios at the end of the book. I also really liked that on the very last page the text that appears on each page throughout the book is in one place and in the form of a poem.

The paintings are beautiful and help bring this time in history back to life for the reader. The story is important and not many authors cover it for a younger audience. The narrator is a great storyteller. The text is normal sized and usually fills an enitre page which makes this book more suitable for older childern.
