An extremely rare edition nowadays, and expensive, but careful research brought an affordably priced copy to my attention. Excellent text, printing and annotations! Indispensible for a serious study of Moby-Dick.
When, oh when will I find the peace and quiet, and the courage, to read this book through?
Latest Dutch translation (after four (or five?) previous ones: J.F. Werumeus Buning (1929), Emy Giphart (1961), ?P.A. Zandstra (1970)?, S. Westerdijk (1979), Helen Knopper (1981)). Due to the popularity of the story many editions have been published, including numerous adaptations, abbreviated versions, illustrated classics, children's books etc, making the publishing history a horror to unravel. The Netherlands are no exception.

This is vintage Slauerhoff. No matter what flaws there are, if you give in to the atmosphere of this book - warning: strongly flavoured with doom and despair - you will find yourself completely immersed in no time. The fates of the Portuguese poet Camoes, an unnamed radio operator and the city of Macao become inextricably intertwined, in spite of the different eras. A virtuoso masterpiece.
Brilliantly double-hearted attack on the Soviet system and the new man. At times hilarious, but also grim and tragical. The heroic, but selfdestructive resistance of Iwan Babitsjew and his final confrontation with his arrogant and overbearing brother is one of the highlights of this book.
This is an almost ideal edition, abundantly annotated and easy to handle. My copy, however, suffers from a stiffened spine and I had to break it in several places, before I could start reading in a comfortable way, which ruined the book (but not the text!!).
This is the reading edition 'par excellence', because of the layout of the text and the beautiful engravings by Rockwell Kent.
My first attempt was shipwrecked after 100 pages or so, but now, some thirty-five years later, I have become a devoted Moby-Dick admirer. What a language, what a vast canvas of the real, the symbolic and the romantic!
Met huiver aan begonnen (1575 bladzijden tekst!). Blijkt koudwatervrees. Wat een geweldig leesavontuur!
