I had so many issues with this as a novel, but I was compelled enough by the ideas here to devour it -- and to want to check out the sequel! Mostly, I think this is a valuable addition to our era's cautionary dystopias because the world here is not one with an oppressive dictatorship (yet), but rather a dystopian *mentality* that leads one person after another to voluntarily oppress themselves. In other words, more of a worldwide cult situation than a 1984 situation.
