Illustrated version of E. Nesbit's delightful and magical fairy tale about a princess with exponentially growing hair.
A terrific way to introduce the powers of two to kids.
Delightful way to introduce the idea of factorials to children.
Powers of Ten: A Book About the Relative Size of Things in the Universe and the Effect of Adding Another Zero by Philip Morrison
Every time you turn a page, the photo zooms in by a factor of 10. The first page shows a billion light years of the universe, then 100 million light years, etc. It takes only 42 page turns until you reach the smallest scale photo--depicting the distance between two quarks.
I bought the original edition of both volumes of this book with solutions a decade ago and it has been used for countless hours by my daughter and many other students to whom we've loaned it (many of whom wound up buying their own copies.)
With all the loaning out we've done, they've gotten a bit battered, and we've now gone through multiple copies of these books, but they've been extremely worthwhile investments for the students who've used them. . A student could profitably spend several hours working on the problems from a single page of this books. These books come out to pennies per student hour of use.
In my opinion, every public library and every middle and high school library should have at least one set of these books!

This book is a masterpiece: simple, spare, elegant, and efficient. It's in a class by itself.
I don't seem to be part of the target audience, since both my children and I love math, but I have worked with children and adults who initially thought they didn't like math. Pat Kenschaft's book is filled with insight, common sense, good humor and good suggestions.
