took a bit to get in to the story, the beginning was rather off putting. As I became engaged with the characters it got much better.
Interesting contemporary account of her experiences as a POW in WWII, drawing from interviews with Margot Turner and colleagues.
Well written, quick read. Ann Carl's minimalist journalistic style makes for a good counterpoint to the adventurous memoir of her days as a test pilot in the WASP.
Amusingly illustrated anecdotal contemporary account of life as a "Rosie". highly entertaining a must read for anyone interested in women's war work in the US during WWII.
The girls of Atomic City : the untold story of the women who helped win World War II by Denise Kiernan
Very interesting topic, great interviews and research, unfortunately Kiernan is not a very engaging writer and the book suffers from a clunky and tedious prose style.
One of the better sources out there for WWII era British women's uniforms. There are notable weaknesses in some service sections but it's a very good start. The section on ATS is the most complete.
highly entertaining episodic look at the McKenny sisters, basis for Wonderful Town and the movie My sister Eileen.
It wasn't bad, for a cheesy historical read. If you are expecting great history or great literature, you'll be disappointed.
I thought this was one of those books I should read, however, I couldn't bring myself to care about Anna or any of the other characters by halfway through. I found the writing rather tedious as well. I'll stick to the Russians short stories, I can make it through those.
An interesting, if somewhat uneven further look at the memorable character of Sally Bowles. This book owes more to the movie Cabaret than Isherwood's Berlin Stories.
An interesting tie in to the minseries, mixing popular fairy tales and the modern world. What happens when reality runs into what happens after the fairy tale ends. Similar in feeling to parts of the Graphic novel Fables.
Shoes, hats and fashion accessories : a pictorial archive 1850-1940 : 2,020 illustrations by Carol Belanger Grafton
Useful in costuming for looking at shapes of accessories particularly shoes, in black and white illustration.
Amusing inter-related short stories with Janet Kagan's usual trickster humor and attention to detail. I love the concept of Dragons Teeth and the visual immediacy of the discriptions. A good fast read.
This book makes me hungry, every time I read it. Part travel narrative, part fish out of water--urban to rural, part food review and enjoyable, however if you approach this book with the expectation it will be like the movie, you will be disappointed. That said this book is one of my favorite armchair vacations.
