Excellent work, in terms of text / genre selections, translation quality, introductory information for each excerpt, editing, and aesthetics.
Excellent translation of a beautiful and inspiring hadith collection. Have used this in teaching to great success. Aesthetically pleasing, as well.
Highly important work in medieval Islamic philosophy, and a profound and illuminating story in itself. Beautifully translated by Goodman, but his introduction is less helpful.
This is an excellent textbook for introductory college-level courses on Islam. I have used it many times. The writing is clear, well-organized, dense, thoughtful, informative. There is a glossary at the back, and each chapter ends with suggested further readings and discussion questions. Apparently there are some online resources with the book but I've not found them very useful and/or have not used them.
