This is a story of Mr. Margo’s students and their biggest emergencies. The book is a collection of the stories that the students submitted. They are funny and the illustrations are great. This would be a great one for a read aloud because it is broken up into individual stories.
This classic story about how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly was a favorite of mine since I was in grade school. I just had to read it again as an adult and this class gave me the perfect excuse to do so. The illustrations are so fun and exciting.
This is an amazing ABC book about what the letters look like from all angles. This book would be great to give to kids and let them play with turning the book sideways and upside down.
This is another awesome wordless picture book in this story weird things begin to happen on Tuesdays around 8. As is necessary with any wordless book the pictures tell the story. I loved his illustrations of flying frogs.
This is a great informational book about how seeds grow and what they need to survive and what thing could harm them. As always with Eric Carle the illustrations support the text so well. This would be a great book to use in a lesson on how plants grow. In kinder I might have them draw a plant and the main parts. I might also have them draw the stages.
This is the second installment in the skippyjon jones series and it is just as funny as the first one. I would use these books in the classroom to talk about imagination and how we can pretend to be someone else. I might have them draw picture and write a story pretending they are something or someone else.
In this story of Skippyjon Jones, Shippyjon finds himself in ancient Egypt. Skippyjon is reunited with his doggy pals, Los Chimichangos, who want to visit the underworld where “mummitos rest in peas. “ I read this book to my students and we all cracked up at the misuses of both English and Spanish.
This book is about a Siamese kitten who thinks he is a Chihuahua. Skippyjon Jones has an active imagination and goes into his closet where he goes on wild adventures as El Skippito Friskito, the Great Sword Fighter. He runs into a gang of Chihuahuas called the Los Chimichangos and he saves them from the El Bumbleito Bandito who is stealing all their beans. This is the first book in the Skippyjon Jones series. These books are so fun to read and I can't wait to read them to my students especially since the stories have some Spanish words and most of my students are Spanish readers.
This was one of the books that when I was a kid I checked out from the library many times. The whimsical poetry is a great way to get kids excited about reading and writing poetry. I would use thins in the classroom to talk about different ways to write poetry and how it can have different structures and shape.
We read this story the first day of class and I loved it. Scaredy Squirrel realized that the world around his can be scary but also very fun. I can’t wait to read this to kids.
This is a collection of stories about tricksters from many different cultures like America, Africa, and the West Indies. Many of these stories have character I have seen in other myths like Anansi the spider and Bruh Rabbit. The illustrations are amazing. This would be a fun one to read in the classroom when talking about myths.
This myth is about how before the slaves were brought to America some of them could fly and when they came to America the left their wing but some could still fly. As the conditions of picking cotton got worse some flew away while others were left. This story seems like it may have originated to explain the disappearance of slaves whether it was because they escaped or because maybe they were killed. The illustrations are amazing and so vivid. I think it would be appropriate to share with older elementary to middle school students in connection with other stories about slavery.
This book is about a young girl and her younger brother who she calls the pain. He is always annoying her and getting more attention from their parents. Then she gets the privilege of staying up late without him but realizes it isn’t much fun playing by herself but in the morning she remembers what a pain her brother is. I loved this book and think any sibling could think of a time when their brother or sister was a pain, I know I can.
This is the first book in the series about David a trouble making young boy. In this book he makes all kinds of trouble for his mom He overflows the bathtub, runs naked through the streets, picks his nose and plays baseball in the house. She is always telling him NO, David! But at the end she tells him she loves him no matter what. I love the illustration and the kid like handwriting.
This story is about Hopscotch is a very brave bunny. He isn’t so brave when his parents leave him with the babysitter. She wants to play, but Hopscotch would much rather be alone in his special NO BABYSITTERS ALLOWED fort. The babysitter tricks the young bunny into coming out by reading a story all wrong. He finally comes out to explain the right way to read the story. This would be better in my opinion for a home library than a classroom library. This would be a great one for a parent to read to a kid to discuss babysitter anxiety.
This story is about Miss Rumphius whose grandfather tells her there are three things she must do. Travel the world, return and live in a house by the sea and do something to make the world a better place. She fulfills all three obligations and makes the world a better place by planting lupine seeds all over. I absolutely adore this book. The moral of the story is about making the world a better place. I think this could be read to any age group followed by a discussion of how they can make the world a better place.
In this story Trixie and her daddy go to the laundry mat and something terrible happens, her precious Knuffle Bunny gets left in the washing machine. Trixie can’t talk very well so it takes her the whole walk home to get her dad to realize something is wrong. They go back to get Knuffle bunny and the day is saved. The illustrations are great the backgrounds are black and white photos and the people are caricatures. I think this book would be so fun to read to early elementary students and to talk about a time they might have lost something that was important to them.
In this story Trixie is grown now and is just starting kindergarten. She is really excited about school and about showing off Knuffle bunny. When she is ready to go home something terrible happen she mixes up Knuffle bunny with one of her classmates’ bunny which looks almost identical. She doesn’t realize it until she is at home in bed in the middle of the night. She wakes up her parents and makes her dad take her to meet up with the other family to get her bunny back. As in the firs Knuffle bunny the illustrations are great. The backgrounds are black and white photos and the people are caricatures.
This book is about a young girl cow named Matilda Rose who loses her kisses but when her dad returns home she finds them again. Matilda Rose learns that you can never really lose your kisses; they will always be there when you need them. The story line is very cute but the illustrations were my favorite part. The illustrations are sort of charcoal sketch with color highlights. I don’t see this one being my first pick for a read aloud but I would definitely include it in my classroom library because I think it is so fun and so well illustrated.
This was a very fun book with awesome illustrations. In the beginning the little boy gets his paint taken away because he was making a mess but of course he manages to get them down from his moms hiding spot and goes on a painting rampage. My favorite part was ~

"I ain't gonna paint no more, no more, I an't gonna paint no more." "But I'm such a nut, gonna paint my-- WHAT?! Y'all don't faint... 'cause there ain't no paint! So I ain't gonna paint no more!".
This would be a fun book to read to elementary children at any age. I love how the picture go from back and white to filled with color as the little boy paints himself along with everything in the house.
This was the most amazing poetry collection and I will most certainly buy it for my classroom when I have one. This collection includes my styles of poetry including some song excerpts from such famous people as Tupac Shakur, Queen Latifa, and Kanye West. It also includes poetry from the greats like Langston Hughes. The audience could really be anyone from young elementary to adult the poetry and illustrations are so varied in difficulty level.
In this book Henry, his parents, and Mudge go on a camping trip. Henry's mother is the outdoors person. "She knew all about camping....Henry's dad didn't know anything about camping. He just came with a guitar and a smile." In the first chapter, they prepare and pack, and Henry imagines the animals they might see, including, maybe, a scary bear. Then they set up camp, and Henry sees wonderful things, including a fish and a deer, a waterfall and a rainbow. In another chapter, Henry and his parents they examine the constellations. This is a great story to build vocabulary about camping and the outdoors
This book is about different types of cats from around the world. I would use this book to talk with early elementary students about different types of cats and where they live. Like Eric Carle’s other books the illustrations provide a great basic idea about what different cats look like. Also like many of his other books this one has a lot of repetition which kids love.
This is a great alphabet book that also teaches about endangered animals. The illustrations are black and white letters in the shapes of animals. I can see this book being very useful at many age levels. It could be fun at a kinder to first grade level to talk about the letters and what animal they are shaped like. It could be used at the upper elementary level to talk about what is an endangered animal. I can see it used at a middle school level to talk about different classifications of animals like the class, phylum, etc.
This easy reader is one of many in the frog and toad series. This book seems to teach kids about friendship at every turn. I loved the adventure they go on together. Frog and Toad have at many times the same logic as age level its written for which I think helps the young reader relate better. One example of this is when they are trying to have willpower and not eat the cookies but in the end they fed the cookies to the birds and then decided to bake a cake.
We read this book during one of our classes, I think the first one. I loved it the illustrations were so fun they really made to book move from page to page. I would have never thought a wordless book could be so fun. I especially love the illustration from the picture the camera took under the sea. This would be great in the classroom to discuss the importance of illustrations and how they can tell a story on there own.
This book is about Nancy and how everything she does is fancy. She is a very unique little girl who acts like a princess. This is a great book to teach children the importance of being and individual. I also thought it would be a great book to use in the classroom to build vocabulary. I think you would have to follow up with something about dinosaurs or trucks to make the boys feel included.
This information book is about Earth and is different components. It talks about earth and it’s relation to the moon and also to the rest of the solar system. It also talks about earth atmosphere, earth’s different layers, and its rotation. This would be an excellent book for students who are just beginning to do research projects because the information is easy to understand and does not contain too many technical terms in also has amazing photos of earth from space. I also think it would be useful because in the back it includes useful websites and addresses to find out more information.
This book is about different animals and how all animals have mothers who love them including humans. This is a great book to introduce children to animals and what they look like. The pictures are great and provide a basic concept about what some animals are shaped and colored like.
In this book David takes his skill in trouble making to the classroom. He writes on desks and cuts in line at lunch. In the end like in the other David books he redeems himself. This is another excellent book that can be read to kinders to teach them about how we behave in school and what consequences might go along with some of David’s behaviors. This is a great way to begin the year and set up behavior management in a fun and comprehendible way for young students.
