Read to a first grade audience. Shows that being themselves is important!
For a mature audience, my favorite book. High school history classes or english classes could benefit from reading this
Great book to introduce the alphabet and also rhymes to children
Students can learn about river pollution through this book. Along with the book at their tables they can do an experiment using their own "rivers" then as a group work to see how to reverse the effects of the pollution just as the book did.
A feel good book! Great for close reading tasks. Young Opal moves to a new town and befriends a stray dog who helps her make some new unlikely friends and brings her closer to her father. Friends come in all shapes and sizes. Students could also watch the movie for this book then compare the two.
Emotional story about a student who was assigned a poetry journal and hates it at first but then falls in love with poetry. Sparks a lot of emotion and thoughts for children. Could be used to provide examples of simple poetry.
Acceptance, bravery, and friendship are the main topics in this WWII story about a family helping their friends who are Jewish escape the relocation. Dramatic and child appropriate way to introduce these topics to younger students.
This Cinderella is a twist on how we know the story. She is very kind and the illustrations are beautiful. This could be used to compare to other Cinderella stories around the world. This being the American version.
A great book about two young girls growing up where their homes are separated by a fence. Made into a book about racism and how even though these girls are different looking, they enjoy the same things. A good story about acceptance and children's innocence and acceptance of those who are different. Maybe use for a history lesson.
About soldiers during world war two fighting for the Union. Deep content for young children such as death, fear of dying and also subtle violence.
A good book to use to put a story behind the historical concepts that are being introduced and taught. Teaches about a different culture in a familiar area to Michigan students.
